3 Health Information  Enablers of information exchange driven by policy and realised through technology, standards, guidelines and protocols

4 Where have we come from?  1949 - Association of Medical Records commenced in Victoria and NSW  1955 - Formation of Australian Federation of Medical Record Librarians (AFMRL)  1975 - Medical Record Association of Australia incorporated  1996 - Health Information Management Association of Australia

5 The Profession Today  Traditional roles in health sector as managers, coders, and advisors  Expanding roles including consultancy, information and data analysis, change management, IT and technical speciality leadership, terminology and audit, quality safety and policy management.  ……there’s no limit to where this can lead

6 The Association’s Role  Membership Services Empower its members to take a leading role in information management in health Provide advocacy and policy input on information management in health Provide a forum for networking, fellowship and mutual support between members  Education Services Deliver Core professional modules – terminologies & classification both nationally & internationally  Consulting Services Undertake Health information systems development, reviews & capacity building nationally & internationally

7 Current Environment  National initiatives supporting ehealth developments – shared electronic health records  Assisting the realisation of managing a patient’s information spread across multiple databases and systems as a whole (conceptual) record

8 Current Environment  Data quality and integrity not just within an application but across the enterprise is a primary goal to support better decision making  Data that is shared electronically between health care organisation must be quality data  Health information managers can help shape: Corporate governance Policies and Use of technology

9 eHealth Initiatives  Overarching federal government drivers  Clinical terminology – SNOMED CT and Australian Medicines Terminology maintained by NEHTA  WHO – ICD10 transitioning to ICD11  The clinical terminology service established by NEHTA  Future state Health informatics

10 New Opportunities  Anticipated demand for health information analysts, change managers and technical experts in classification and terminologies  Understanding how information systems can support patient care and the patient care processes  Support requirements and procurement, implementation and redesign of clinical workflows

11 New Challenges  Education landscape has changed dramatically in last year – inconsistent approach to course structure across Universities Undergraduate program or first 2 years offered as generic Specialisation offered as postgraduate program or in subsequent years  Universities & HIMAA working to align approaches
