So What Has happened? ► The DH has given us a relatively free hand to create our own MSc ► IMPT working with Manchester Metropolitan University and King ’ s College London ► Questionnaire to scope practice ► Develop course curriculum

Scientist Training Programme (STP) ► Three year training program ► Joint course between MMU and King ’ s ► Probable 2 days per week at either university

Scientists Training Programme ► To start in September 2012 ► Large research component ► Entry by Dental Technology graduates only

Appointed Trainees Will Be: ► Fully funded, that is: Salary Course fees Host unit set up costs ► And based at Hospital Trusts who have been selected as Host Training Centres.

Ideally, Host Training Units Will: ► Offer the full range of clinical and technical practice ► Be able to take a student each year ► Have access to library, research and study facilities

Host Units Will Need To: ► Appoint a staff member who will be trained to mentor and assist students with: Completion of log book Ethical approval Placement Liaison with University

And Also ► Possibly provide travel and accommodation costs

Those Wishing To Be A Host Training Unit ► Act now ► Contact your PCT and Provider Skills Network ► Compile case for being a training unit ► If needed, look at neighbouring units for placements.

The Trainee ► Time will be totally spent on university work, research and log book ► Not to be one off successor planning ► Paid at pay band 6

Trainee (Continued) ► Selection process for trainee is not fully confirmed but: Unlikely to be chosen by host unit Universities will have a large say in the appointment

Why an MSc ? ► DH have judged us to be at this level ► Lesser qualification, less pay ► Improve quality of research throughout the profession ► Strengthen case for registration
