1 States of Matter 3rd Grade Science By: Allison Stillwell

2 What is Matter? Everything around you is matter!
Matter is anything that has mass (the amount of stuff in an object) and takes up space. There are different states, or phases, of matter. Changes can occur between these states.

3 States of Matter The 3 Main States of Matter are: - Solid - Liquid
- Gas

4 Solid A solid is a state of matter that… Keeps its shape
Does not flow easily Contains particles that can’t move past one another

5 Liquid A liquid is a state of matter that…
Takes the shape of its container Flows easily Is made up of particles that can slide past one another

6 Gas A gas is a state of matter that… Has no shape of its own
Flows easily Is made up of particles that can easily move past one another

7 QUIZ TIME!

8 Which of the following is a solid?
Water Paint Rock

9 Is a liquid a state of matter?
YES NO

10 Which of the following is a gas?
Helium (inside the balloon) Apple Milk

11 A solid can never change to a liquid, because changes can’t occur between states.
TRUE FALSE

12 Which of the following is NOT a liquid?
Juice Toothpaste Pencil

13 CORRECT! That is a solid. It keeps its shape and doesn’t flow easily.
