Confidence Believe in yourself!

Consider these questions… (pictures from Google Images) What is your definition of “confidence”? Are you confident? Who do you think is/are confident? If being confident important? Why? Can you come up with a moving story about confidence? How to be confident?

Confidence, Arrogance & Presumptuousness (from Wikipedia) Confidence is a state of being certain. Self-confidence is having confidence in oneself. Arrogance is having unmerited confidence—believing something or someone is capable or correct when they are not. Presumptuousness is excessive belief in someone (or something) succeeding, without any regard for failure..

I think these people are confident… Conan Edogawa, the Detective He never doubts if he could solve the case. (he only works for solutions, and succeeds) He helps others to build confidence. (e.g. by scaffolding people to deductions) His confident smile is so charming.

I think these people are confident… Naruto Uzumaki, the Ninja He never gives up. (even when the world stands against him) He has a big dream and believes that he can make it. (although he is not talented, he is very hard-working ) He holds on to his belief and takes actions to help make this world a better place.

I think these people are confident… Ryoma Echizen, the Prince of Tennis He believes that he is the best, and he really is. He does not give up no matter what. (even when he’s seriously injured…) Confronting with strong opponents, what he cares is to find a way to triumph—no anxiety or worries at all.

Being confident is important because… when you’re confident, you don’t waste your time worrying about things; instead, you’d rather work for the way-out with undivided attention; when you’re confident, you will be ready to take challenges and shoulder responsibilities, and these opportunities may otherwise slip away; when you’re confident, you let people become aware that you believe in yourself, thus they will believe in you, which will add to your charming characteristics; when you’re confident, “giving up” is absent from your dictionary…

Let me tell you a story… Since I became a college student, I started to participate in various English speaking contests; however, I just couldn’t get the first prize. “But it’s okay,” I thought to myself, “after all, I’m still far from being good enough…” Then during my sophomore year, there was this English Talent Contest in which one was supposed to deliver a speech, before which a video of self-introduction should be played. I spent a whole day making that video, and set my favourite song “This Is Me” from Camp Rock as the background music. On the evening of that day of grand finale while I was waiting for my turn, thinking (again) that it would be okay even if I got a third prize, I heard the song I sang in that video, “This is real. This is me. I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be now. Gonna let the light shine on me…” At that moment, I suddenly felt this impulse of confidence running through me! And as the video ended, I walked onto the stage, and said what I wanted to say—I won the first prize; and that was my first championship during my college years. This is the power of confidence. FYI, this is the link to that video: http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNDI0NDA3MDEy.htmlhttp://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNDI0NDA3MDEy.html

How to be confident? (from wikiHow) Appearing confident: dress how you feel best; perfect your posture; smile; make eye contact; keep your body open; hold your gaze. Thinking confidently: recognize your talents and good qualities; think of the obstacles that stand in the way of your confidence; see confidence as a process, not a singular achievement; remember you were born with it; stop having your inner dialogue, and swirl with the world. Practicing confidence: embrace your interests; talk to strangers; don’t over- apologize; accept compliments gracefully; build your confidence by helping others and feeling good; ignore those who constantly judge you; slow down and don’t be nervous; expect success; take risks.

Be confident and become an excellent public speaker! Fake it until you make it. → Fake it until you become it!

What is the most important trait to you? Create your module in pairs or groups and share it with us on Wikis. Use your own model—design your course the way you prefer~! And… Prepare a speech of five minutes for next week’s speech contest!
