Chapter 10: The Resurrection God is Victorious! Jesus Is Lord!

Which scene of the bible represents this painting?

Resurrection of Jesus Mark 16, 1-8 Christianity would not even exist if not for what happened after the death of Jesus. The arrest, trail and death by crucifixion have been recalled and passed on for thousand of years. How was this passed on? What event occurred after the death of Jesus Christ?

The Resurrection Resurrection account: –Brief in comparison to final days of his life –Straight forward account (Mark’s account) –Offering little detail

–Many of us might like to ask the Evangelists a few questions: What did Jesus look like when he was raised from the dead by God Did anyone actually see Jesus come out of the tomb? If no one saw him, how do we know that he was really raised? Maybe somebody just stole the body to make people think he was raised? How can people today be expected to believe something so incredible, something that is almost unbelievable?

What Happened? See Matthew 27, 62-66; 28, 1-20 Jesus was buried in a Tomb –All 4 Gospels agree that Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for His body after His death –The body was wrapped in a burial cloth called a shroud, and laid it a tomb (the completion of the preparation of the body had to wait) Why? –Pontius Pilate assigned soldiers to guard the tomb (why?)

Jewish leaders where concerned that Jesus’ disciples would steal the body and claim that Jesus had risen from the dead as He had predicted. Other common points in the Gospel Accounts:  Various people go the tomb and discover that the body of Jesus is no longer there.  The people who go to the tomb find out-on their own or through one or more messengers of God, that Jesus was no longer dead but alive, and will come again to reveal himself.  Go to next slide

 The initial reactions of the witnesses are quite naturally, shock and then fear. But soon they experience him among them…  Evidence for Accepting the Resurrection: –St. Paul states (1 Co 15:14) –Ultimately recognizing the risen Christ is a matter of faith –However, there is historical evidence that supports the Christian conviction of the Resurrection –Watch “The Burial Of Jesus, Resurrection, And Appearances” then go to next slide

– The empty Tomb also testifies to the reality of the Resurrection. – The Resurrection was a consistent belief in the early church ---------------------------------------------------------- What does the Resurrection Mean? Jesus recognized as the Son of God –For 1 st believers and Christians today demonstrated the truth of Jesus’ divine claim –The 1 st Christians started to call Jesus the Christ (Messiah), our Lord.

All these titles pointed to Jesus’ divine nature as the Son of God, not just a great, good man Go to video “The Holy Shroud of Turin” Ascension of Jesus

Luke’s Gospel 24;50-53 Acts of the Apostles 1;9-11 Mathew does not mention the event This is an event beyond human comprehension After the resurrection of Jesus, He passed totally into the presence of God, and in doing so He moved beyond our experience of time and space God is not “out there”, rather “right here, right now” The “Kingdom of God is among us”

Pentacost
