6 Communicate using a warm, genuine tone Demonstrated by: Communicating with a warm vocal tone and demonstrating genuine interest in what the trainee is saying, while minimizing barriers to effective listening. Genuine interest can be demonstrated by actively listening, empathizing to accurately understand the trainee’s point of view, and asking questions with intention. Barriers to effective listening can appear as arguing, criticizing, shaming, blaming, or judging … When alliance is absent, or damaged, the tone of the interaction may sound robotic, distant, or like the Coach is just “going through the motions”.
