2  One in three American adolescents are overweight  One in five are obese  Can cause significant emotional and physical health issues  Obese children ages 10-13 have 80% chance of becoming an obese adult

3 Contrary to popular belief, only 1% of the obese population have causes attributable to medical factors According the CDC, dietary factors and physical activity main causes for obesity Roughly 1/3 of Americans do not cook because they DO NOT know how (Huffington Post)

4  “One major way to effectively combat obesity is to address the environments where our children spend most of the time eating--- school and home. Home economics and physical education have been removed in many environments due to budget cuts. As a society, we have created the perform storm for obesity to occur. Children are like sponges, they absorb what is in their every day life. When we provide children access and education they become empowered, educated and confident. “

5  (105 ILCS 5/2-3.139.) of School State Code Sec 2-3 139. School Wellness Policies (a)The State Board of Education shall establish a State goal consistent with recommendations of the CDC, which recommends the following: (1)Nutrition guidelines for all foods sold on campus; (2)Setting school goals for Nutrition education and physical activity; (3)Establishing community participation in creating local wellness policies (4)Creating a plan for measuring implementation of wellness policies………..

6 Chicago Overcoming Obesity in Kids -Pilot Program -Teaches Freshman High School Student How to Cook Nutritionally

7  Section E of Sec.105 ILCS 5/2-3. 139. Chicago Overcoming Obesity in Kids pilot program. The State Board of Education shall implement and administer COOK for the study and evaluation of cooking based nutrition classes in Chicago Public Schools and provide appropriate trained faculty. The program shall be operated over a period of 4 years, beginning with the 2013- 2014 school year. The State Board of Education is authorized to make grants to appropriate school districts, implement program, and therefore evaluate its effectiveness.
