2 The Bill of Rights The Constitution outlines what our government can and can’t do. The Bill of Rights is the list of the first ten amendments at the end of the Constitution that protects our individual rights. In the Civil Rights movement people fought for the recongintion of their rights. And won.

3 Bill of Rights: Concepts The Constitution is the highest form of law in the United States. It is the way we measure if laws are fair. Due process the government must act fairly and in accord with established rules in all that it does.

5 Second Amendment You have the right to own and keep a firearm or weapon.

6 Third Amendment As a citizen, you are not required to house soldiers.

7 Fourth Amendment Protection of your home against unreasonable search & seizure. It requires a search warrant to be issued & signed by a judge, only upon probable cause.

8 Fifth Amendment Requires a formal indictment before criminal charges can be brought, forbids double jeopardy, and prohibits self-incrimination. Also guarantees due process & compensation for any property taken.

9 Quick Check Pick two amendments (1-5) and write down a new example of a scenario that violates that amendment. When you are done, turn to an elbow partner and share.

10 Sixth Amendment Guarantees a fair and speedy trial with an attorney before an impartial jury.

11 Seventh Amendment Guarantees a jury in civil lawsuits

12 Eighth Amendment You have the right to reasonable bail & no cruel or unusual punishment.

13 Ninth Amendment R ights NOT specifically granted to the Constitution belong to the people! T hink of an example of a right you have that may fall under the 9 th amendment.

14 Tenth Amendment Rights not granted to the Federal government are given to the states & the people. Think of an example of a right you have that may fall under the 10 th amendment.

15 14 th Amendment T he Bill of Rights applies to the state governments. E qual Protection of the Law means every one is protected in the same way. Think of a historical example that was a violation of this. Think of a historical example that was a violation of this.
