Math Curriculum Night Third Grade

How are we teaching Math in Cobb County? Number Talks Flipcharts Manipulatives Online resources Interactive Math Journals Exemplars (Higher Order Problem Solving)

What is a Number Talk? It is a time where we have a class meeting to discuss different ways to solve mathematical equations. Example of addition: expanded form, number lines, picture drawing, algorithms, etc.

Interactive Math Journals Math Journals are interactive notebooks that students use as a resource or tool in learning math. These notebooks allow the student to return to previous learning in order to solve new problems.

Flipcharts Flipcharts are virtual notebooks that are featured on the promethean board. Let’s look at an example!!!

Online Resources IXL.com Learnzillion Exemplar Website Brain Pop Promethean Planet Xtramath.org Student Websites (mathplayground.com, multiplication.com)

Where are we going with Multiplication & Division ? Properties of multiplication Strategies of solving basic multiplication problems (arrays, pictures, etc.) Multiplication Fact Fluency Deep understanding of multiplication & division problem solving

Exemplars Grasshopper Climbs a Tree A Grasshopper is at the bottom of a 14-foot tree and is trying to get to the top. During the day she climbs 6 feet up but at night she slides back 4 feet. How long does it take for her to climb the tree?

Mutliplication Exemplar Here is an example of a Multiplication/division exemplar. Meddling with the Medals Task The Winter Olympics are coming! Here at Central School we are going to hold a mini-Olympics. The countries participating are Germany, France, Switzerland, Japan, Canada and the U.S.A.. There will be a total of 24 medals given out. 3 medals will be given for each event: 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze. There are 8 sporting events. These include slalom skiing, downhill racing, ski jumping, figure skating, speed skating, bobsledding, luge and freestyle snowboarding. Your assignment is to mathematically determine which countries should get medals in which events so that all of the medals are given out, resulting in 3 winners for each event. Each country must win at least 2 medals. Remember to show how you organize your work and the steps you follow to solve this problem. Good luck!

Thank You!! Third Grade would like to Thank you for coming to our Math Curriculum Night. Please make sure you take a Packet of Math Games with you!!!
