I- Chemistry of Iodine
7
Discovery of Iodine element by Bernard Courtois in 1811 Discovery of Iodine
8
Physical Properties violet-dark gray solid Density: 5 g/cm 3 Melting Point: 114°C Boiling Point: 185°C
9

II- Radioactivity of Iodine
12
Iodine isotopes Isotopes are atoms of the same element having the same number of protons but different number of neutrons. There are 37 isotopes of Iodine Ex: I 127, I 129, I 131 … The only stable isotope of Iodine is I 127.
13
If radiation is a form of energy ….. Then it can not be created (First Low of Thermodynamics). So where does it come from???????????! The source of radiation is the loss in mass (E=MC 2 ) Half-life period is the time after which the mass will reach half of its initial value. Half-life period is very important in determining the time needed for the radioactive substance to completely decay. Radiation & Half-life Period

III- Radioisotope Therapy (RIT-I131)
16
Radiotherapy [ Iodine-131 ] Definition. Medical use of IONIZING RADIATION in treatment of Cancer and Malignant cells. Radiotherapy Vs. Radiology ! ! History of Radiotherapy : Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen Marie Curie
17
Mechanism of action : DAMAGE OF DNA.. Both strands ? Damage is inherited in cancerous cells. Free radicals ( hydroxyl radicals ). Radiotherapy [ Iodine-131 ]
18
Radioisotope Therapy ( RIT ) INFUSION 1.MIBG: Neuroblastoma 2.ORAL IODINE 131: Thyrotoxicosis 3.RADIOACTIVE GLASS : Hepatic cancer INGESTION Radiotherapy [ Iodine-131 ]
19
FELINE HYPERTHYRODISM Procedure.. Advantages.. Disadvantages.. Radiotherapy [ Iodine-131 ]
20
Radiation protection. Based on : TimeDistanceShielding Radiotherapy [ Iodine-131 ]
21
1- Reducing the time of an exposure reduces the effective dose proportionally. 2- Increasing distance reduces dose due to the inverse square law. 3- Adding shielding can also reduce radiation doses.
