1 The Government of China
What type of government system is used in China? How is power shared in China? What is the role of the citizen in China?

2 Government System China has a unitary communist government system.
China is also an oligarchy, because only one group, the Communist Party of China, has control of the government. The government has three branches, however, there is no true separation of powers in China’s government.

3 Executive Branch China’s executive branch consists of the president, vice-president, premier, vice-premier, and the State Council. The president is the chief of state. He or she represents China in the international world. The president is selected by the Communist Party of China.

4 Executive Branch The premier is the head of the government.
His or her role is very similar to that of a prime minister. He or she is chosen by the Communist Party of China.

5 Legislative Branch The legislative branch is composed of members of the National People’s Congress. Members of the legislative branch choose the president and vice-president and review laws sent from the executive branch All members of the Communist Party of China and are elected by local councils. The National People’s Congress meets only 14 days a year.

6 Legislative Branch Because the National People’s Congress only meets 14 days a year, the Politburo runs the country the rest of the year. The Politburo is composed of the leaders of the Communist Party of China. The General Secretary of the Communist Party heads the Politburo and is in command of the army. 7 Judicial Branch The judicial branch is composed of Supreme People’s Court. The judicial branch is not independent of the executive branch. The Supreme People’s Court cannot challenge the actions of the legislative or executive branch. The members of the court make sure the people of China follow the Communist Party’s policies.

9 The Communist Party The Communist Party of China controls China’s government. The party sets policies that are enforced by the central government. Members are any Chinese person who is at least 18 years old, accepts the party’s beliefs and constitution, is willing to carry out its decisions, and pays dues.

10 Citizen Participation
Chinese citizens 18 and older can vote in elections. Citizens have very limited power in China. Chinese elections feature only candidates selected by the Communist Party of China. Many members of the international community accuse China of violating citizen’s human rights by not allowing them to choose their own leaders or have influence on the nation’s laws.
