2. Personal Responsibility Be Prepared! –Know what is expected of you! Listen to & read instructions carefully. Ask questions if you are not sure how to do something.

4. Personal Responsibility Backpacks and Books –Backpacks must be kept in lockers at all times. Take books in labs only when told to do so.

6. Personal Responsibility No Food or Drink –Contamination can occur from animal feces, bacteria or chemicals. Bottled water is acceptable.

8. Personal Responsibility No Horse Play! –Goofing around will not be tolerated! It is not safe & you will lose your lab privileges and be given a 0!!

9. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

10. General PPE Requirements Footwear –You will be required at all times to wear closed- toe shoes in the Ag Building, greenhouse or land lab…no sandals!

12. Long Hair & Bulky Cloths –These can cause fire and chemical hazards. Long hair should be tied back and bulky clothing tucked in.

13. General PPE Requirements Dangling Jewelry –Jewelry can get in the way and get caught on things. All jewelry should be tucked away under clothing or removed.

16. General PPE Requirements Hand Washing –Keep hands clean at all times. Always wash them after labs and after handling animals.

19. PPE- Science Lab You will be given instructions on special protective items you will need to wear during lab activities. Adhere to the rules for your own safety!!

21. PPE- Science Lab Eye Protection –Goggles should be worn when using chemicals, working with certain equipment, or other dangerous tasks.

23. PPE- Science Lab Gloves –Gloves are used to keep chemicals and other contaminants off of hands.

25. PPE- Barn Clothes –Dress for the weather and the task. –You may keep a change of clothes in the Coat Room.

26. PPE- Barn Shoes –Recognize that livestock and step on your feet and hurt you.

29. Accidents can happen! Remain calm and report the incident to your teacher immediately!!

30. Lab Emergency Equipment Know where to find: –The First Aid Kit –Eye Wash Station –Safety Shower –Fire Extinguisher/Blanket –Sharps/Biohazard Boxes

31. Lab Emergency Equipment First Aid Kit – Use for cuts, scrapes & bites. Only let the teacher assist! Do not come into contact with another person’s blood!

32. Lab Emergency Equipment Eye Wash Station –Use for chemicals or foreign objects in eyes. Flood eyes with water. Eye lids must be forcibly held open.

33. Lab Emergency Equipment Safety Shower – Provides treatment for large amounts of chemicals spilled on skin.

34. Lab Emergency Equipment Fire –The best prevention of fire is to pay attention and not be careless! If a fire happens, DO NOT PANIC!

35. Lab Emergency Equipment Fire –If you catch on fire, STOP, DROP AND ROLL!

36. Lab Emergency Equipment Fire Blanket – Used for assisting with clothing fires. Never wrap a person in the blanket standing up…this creates a chimney effect!

37. Lab Emergency Equipment Fire Extinguisher – Must be used 5-6 feet from the fire. Think P-A-S-S!

38. Lab Emergency Equipment PASS – Pull Pin – Aim at base of fire – Squeeze handle – Sweep back and forth.

39. Lab Emergency Equipment Gas Fire- –Turn off the main gas shut-off valve.

40. Lab Emergency Equipment Sharps Container –Broken glass is to be placed in the sharps box. Glass put in the trash may injure someone later.

41. Lab Emergency Equipment Biohazard Container –Bloody items need to be placed in the Biohazard Box. Be mindful of blood-borne pathogens.

44. General Safety Guidelines Turn off gas, shut off hotplates and extinguish all flames when you are not using them.

45. General Safety Guidelines Never touch shop and ag equipment until you understand the directions completely and have been given instructions to begin.

47. General Safety Guidelines Never taste, smell or touch any chemicals or other lab materials unless instructed to do so.

48. General Safety Guidelines Never rinse chemicals down the drain without the permission of the teacher. Clean sinks out thoroughly with soap when you are done using them.

49. General Safety Guidelines Keep your hands off of your face, body and out of your mouths while working in the lab or with animals. Remember to practice good hygiene.

50. General Safety Guidelines When lifting heavy items, begin in a squatting position and lift with your legs and not your back. Do not lift oversized items without assistance.

52. General Safety Guidelines Do not handle animals belonging to other people. If your animal is new, skittish, sick, eating or asleep, use caution.

53. General Safety Guidelines For the safety of the animals, do not put together different breeds of animals or animals of the same breed that are unfamiliar with each other.

57. Handle sharp or pointed tools with care Always carry sharp or pointed tools with the point down Never carry tools in your pocket Don’t use tools that are loose or cracked Chisels or punches with mushroomed heads should be ground smooth Don’t use a file without a handle

58. Don’t use screwdrivers as chisels or pry bars Don’t use a “cheater” with a wrench After using a tool, clean it and return it to its proper place If anything breaks or malfunctions, report it to your instructor at once Never place tools & materials where they hang on the edge of the table

59. Don’t use tools for things they weren’t meant for Cut away from yourself when using sharp tools Don’t pry or hammer with file.
