Measurement is an activity to compare a quanity with another quantity that is assigned as unit. To measure the quantity of length, we can use a vernier caliper. Vernier caliper is an instrument to measure length which is more accurate than a ruler, since it has the smallest scale of 0,1 mm.

CONSIST OF A VERNIER CALIPER

HOW TO READ THE SCALE OF A VERNIER CALIPER?  The reading of the main scale that coincides with the zero vernier scale is between 3 mm and 4 mm.  The vernier scale that is joint vertically with the main scale is the seventh scale. Thus, the reading of the vernier caliper is (3mm + 0,7mm) = 3,7mm

CONSIST OF A MICROMETER SCREW GAUGE

HOW TO READ THE SCALE OF A MICROMETER SCREW GAUGE?  The reading of the main scale that coincides with the edge of the outer wrap is 7,5mm.  The outer wrap line which coincides exactly with the horizontal line of the main schale is 38-th line. Thus, the reading of the micrometer screw gauge is (7,5mm + 38 part) = 7,5mm + 0,38mm = 7,88mm.

WORKSHEET Objectives : Doing measurement of length, outer diameter, and width by vernier caliper and micrometer screw gauge Materials : - Cubes - Cylinders - Vernier caliper - Micrometer screw gauge Experiment methods : Measure length, and width of cubes by vernier caliper micrometer screw gauge Measure length and outer diameter of cylinder by vernier caliper and micrometer screw gauge

EVALUATION  What is measurement?  What is an instrument to measure the length?  Why a micrometer screw gauge more accurate than a vernier caliper?  What is the reading of the vernier scale shown below!

EVALUATION  A ring is measured by a vernier caliper. What is the diameter of the ring as read in the scale?

EVALUATION  The following figure illustrates a micrometer screw gauge. What is reading shown?

EVALUATION  A student uses a micrometer screw gauge to measure the diameter of a cylinder. The following figure shows the reading of the micrometer screw gauge. What is the the reading shown?

CONCLUSION  Measurement is an activity to compare a quanity with another quantity that is assigned as unit. To measure the quantity of length, we can use a vernier caliper.  The vernier consists of a main scale engraved on a fixed jaw and an vernier scale engraved on a movable/sliding jaw he steps of reading the scale of a vernier caliper are: Read the main scale that coincides with the zero vernier scale Read the vernier scale that is joint vertically with the main scale.

CONCLUSION  The micrometer screw gauge consists of thimble/outer wrap, sliding jaw, sleeve with main scale. he steps of reading the scale of a vernier caliper are: Read the main scale that coincides with the edge of the outer wrap Read the outer wrap line which coincides exactly with the horizontal line of the main scale.
