Correlation in SPSS

Correlation in SPSS is very simple and efficient  Step 1. Switch to Data View to make sure the data isn’t corrupted or changed.

Correlation in SPSS  Step 2.  Click on Analyze >> Correlate >> Bivariate

Correlation in SPSS  Step 3.  You can choose 2 or more variables to compare and move them over to the right column of “Variables:”  This will create a table with all possible paired combinations (imagine finding r for each pairs)

Correlation in SPSS  Step 4.  Make sure you select either Two- tailed or One-tailed depending upon your Alternative Hypothesis  You can leave “Flag significant correlations”  p <.01 will be flagged with **  p <.05 will be flagged with *  Marginally significant will not be flagged  Hit OK

Correlation in SPSS  Step 5.  The Output if you had selected only TWO items:

Correlation in SPSS  Step 5.  The Output if you had selected everything:

Correlation in SPSS  Step 6.  Write-up in APA style  Please make sure you note the probability (p) when you’re reporting your correlations.

Graphing in SPSS Scatterplot

Scatterplot in SPSS  Step 1. Click on Graphs >> Chart Builder… (Ignore the warning, for now, since you have continuous variables)

Scatterplot in SPSS  Step 2. Select your pair of variables  Choose Scatterplot

Scatterplot in SPSS  Step 3. Click and drag the Simple Scatter to the stage

Scatterplot in SPSS  Step 4. Add one variable to X-axis (like Apples)

Scatterplot in SPSS  Step 5. Add the other variable to Y-axis (like Oranges)

Scatterplot in SPSS  Step 6. You can change the label names by clicking on “X-Axis1 (Point1)”  Then renaming it from “Axis Label”  Hit OK when you’re done

Scatterplot in SPSS  You’ll get this:

Scatterplot in SPSS  Step 7. Double click on the graph to get the Chart Editor.

Scatterplot in SPSS  Step 8. Add a title

Scatterplot in SPSS

 Step 10. Get rid of the ugly gray  Click on the graph’s body and then click on “Fill” box in the Properties window then choose white instead

Scatterplot in SPSS  Step 11. Place the line of best fit (regression line)  Click Elements >> Fit Line at Total

Scatterplot in SPSS  Step 12. Now it’s ready to copy and paste  Close the Chart Editor and right-click on the graph in the Output window  Copy!
