2 What are Career Clusters?
Diverse occupations in Health Care: Doctor or Nurse (care providers) Hospital Administrator (management) Medical Researcher (university or company) Biomedical Equipment Repair Medical Librarian Etc. Have you ever heard someone say they want to work in Health Care and wondered exactly what they mean? Do they want to become a doctor or a nurse? Do they want to be a hospital administrator or work in a medical research lab? Are they interested in maintaining and repairing biomedical equipment or becoming a medical librarian? The field of health care includes a broad and diverse set of occupations. If all of these careers are related to health care, how are they alike and how do they differ? One way to define the commonalities and differences in jobs is to organize them into career clusters. What do these careers have in common? They are all part of a Career Cluster.

3 What are Career Clusters?
Are a way to organize occupations that are related to an industry. Define career pathways a person can follow and the knowledge and skills they need. Link learning in school to knowledge & skills needed for success in college and careers. Learning is more relevant to career interests and goals.

4 Lesson Objectives In this lesson, we will:
Introduce the 16 Career Clusters Describe the Career Pathways for each cluster. Show occupations within a Career Pathway. Share employment projections for careers in each cluster. List cluster occupations that will be in demand. Help you to discover clusters you may want to explore.

5 What are Career Clusters?
Traditional approach to career prep: Job-specific training (e.g. surgical technician) What happens if your job becomes obsolete (Surgical Tech’s replaced by medical robots)? Career Cluster approach to career prep: Gain knowledge & skills common to a cluster of careers You can more easily move from one career to another within a cluster – transferable skills The traditional approach for preparing for a career is to focus on obtaining the training and education needed for a specific job. For example, an individual might spend a number of years training to be a surgical technician, assisting doctors and nurses in surgery. Some experts predict, however, that robots will replace many surgical functions now performed by medical staff. What could you do if you are replaced by a robot? Would you have to start all over in a new career? The career cluster approach recognizes that skills learned for one occupation may be transferable to another related occupation, and that career education should focus on teaching knowledge and skills that are common to related careers. Jobs and careers will change as new technologies and ways of working emerge, and workers will need to adapt to those changes. If you have the knowledge and skills that are common to a cluster of careers, you can more easily adapt to career and job transitions. Career researchers say that you can expect to change your career as many as seven times in your life. Experts say: Expect 7 or more career changes in your life.
