2 2 LEARNING OBJECTIVES  TLO: Student is thoroughly knowledgeable and prepared to lead his/her cadets on a CELTT mission.  ELO#1: Student understands the purpose of the CELTT mission  ELO#2: Student understands the role of the DOI  ELO#3: Student is thoroughly familiar with the CELTT textbook and lesson planning  ELO#4: Student understands the fundamentals of organizing and teaching a language/culture class

3 3  The primary purpose of the CELTT program is to foster individualized interaction between a US Army ROTC Cadet and a host-country military partner in the medium of the English Language. CELTT Objective: ELO#1

4 4 ROLE OF the DOI: ELO#2 Coordinate academic agenda and schedule  Liaise with all stakeholders Familiarize cadets with CELTT resource material  Build rapport with cadets Act as EFL/ESL resource for language issues  Work closely with partner nation POCs Observe participant discussions and provide guidance for enhanced interaction Provide formal instruction as necessary to initiate/facilitate learning experiences

6 6  ROTC Cadet and Host-Country Partner will have: Up to five hours of interaction per day Five days a week For three-week rotations Total up to 75 hours of contact Proposed CELTT Schedule: ELO#3

7 7 ROLE OF THE TEAM LEADER: ELO#4 ACKNOWLEDGE DOI as a member of the team DOI as SME for classroom training DOI has no military responsibility INCLUDE DOI in all lesson planning DOI as trainer of cadet instructors DOI in all appropriate functions

8 8 TEAM LEADER TASKS: ELO#4 Incorporate the DOI as a FULL TEAM MEMBER Acknowledge as SME/classroom leader Assist the DOI with lesson planning Attempt to learn (with DOI) level of proficiency of class Work with DOI (HN POC) to adjust instructional level as needed Watch for acceptable cadet:student ratio—4/5 to 1 is preferred Lead daily review with DOI of cadet classroom performance Were students engaged? Students placed in small groups Cadets elaborating when a student speaks Cadets asking for more info (not just yes/no answers) Cadets helping with pronunciation

9 9 CADET TASKS: ELO#4 Textbook familiarity Lesson Planning Daily class review with peers/TL Utilize the classroom “tips” for effective teaching Act to include all students in the lesson Draw out host country students with own experiences

10 10 LESSONS LEARNED: ELO#4 DOI in charge of the classroom DOI/MC/TL communicate early and often MC/TL ID the DOI to the Embassy Use the textbook as a planning tool—not all inclusive Skits/drama/etc are a force multiplier in learning Ensure supplies are available Know the English proficiency of the class DOIs pay their own way—but can join in on freebies DOI is part of the team and a huge resource Treat accordingly---include in team activities as desired Get a daily reflection from cadets to collect weekly
