3. Ionic compounds A compound in which the particles are held together by ionic bonding is called an ionic compound. They consist of many oppositely charged ions held together strongly to form a crystal lattice. Examples of ionic compounds include NaCl and MgO.

4. Covalent Compounds A covalent compound is made up of separate, single molecules. In a covalent compound there is weak attraction between the individual molecules. Examples of covalent compounds include H 2 O and CH 4.
