2 Assessment & Discovery Strategies used to support individuals to identify skills, interests and set direction for employment and career development Key strategies include: – Career Planning – Discovery – Assessments – Action plans

3 Career Planning – Person-centered – Results focus on what makes sense for the person – Uses a team of supporters that know the person best – It is not a “formal” funding driven plan (IP, IPE, IEP, etc.) – Results are used to drive “formal” plans Resource: Career Discovery Guide

5 DISCOVERY Definition: to see, get knowledge of, learn of, find, or find out; gain sight or knowledge of (something previously unseen or unknown):

6 Discovery – Discovery is not a strict “model” or “process” – Discovery never stops – Discovery is all about “seeking answers” – The 4 most critical aspects to discover Conditions Preferences Contributions Support Needs

7 Discovery – Strategies Interviews (Individual, Team, etc.) Observation (all environments) Record Review (files, school records, etc.) Past Experiences (work, social, recreation, etc.) Career Exploration – Informational interviews with employers – Job Shadowing – Work Experiences – Internships – Job Tryouts – Resources: Career Discovery Guide, Griffin-Hammis

8 Spend time with individual where they are the most comfortable who they are 1- 2 hours at a time Home environment, community Key things to observe: Personal goals /Dreams/ Interest/hobbies /Talents Strengths/ Abilities Best learning style/ What supports do they need. Personal Values/ Cultural Work availability/ Work environment Education/Job History/References Transportation

9 Assessments – Used to help the individual and their supporters to gain insights into their gifts, talents, skills and interests (and identify/anticipate supports) – This is part of the discovery process

10 Assessments – Strategies Interest Inventories and other “pencil-paper” tests Tests/Assessments utilized by Workforce Development Strategies used in Discovery

11 Action Plans – Developed from all the information gathered through Career Planning and Discovery. 12 Putting it all Together All the information gathered begins to paint a picture of “What” a good job and career goal will be What types of jobs is the person interested in? Types of jobs that match skills/interests What type of work are they good at and enjoy doing?
