Why apply for disability benefits? You paid for it, you should take advantage of it! Your No. 1 concern should be your health Continuing to work full-time can prevent you from healing and getting back to 100% Qualifying for disability benefits can also qualify you for benefits such as Medicare/Medicaid You can get benefits for yourself, as well as your children You can earn up to approximately $1,000 per month in addition to your disability benefits with part-time work

Types of benefits available Supplemental Security Income Needs-based program Maximum amount of assets No work history requirements Benefits available back to application date Eligible for Medicaid immediately upon approval for disability benefits Application for SSI in Alabama acts as application for Medicaid as well Social Security Disability Insurance Insurance-based program Substantial recent work required Can also apply on the earnings record of a disabled or deceased spouse or parent No asset limitations Benefits available up to 6 months prior to application date Eligible for Medicare as of 24 months following the onset of your disability

The process File an initial application Have your case evaluated by initial decision maker Receive your initial decision Appeal that decision, if necessary, for a hearing Go in front of Administrative Law Judge Receive decision in mail Payments are processed within 6 weeks of favorable decision

What is “disability” according to the Social Security Administration A person is considered disabled when they have: A diagnosed medical condition That is expected to last for 12 months (or determined to be terminal) Which causes an inability to perform substantial work Work that is full time Work that exceeds specific earnings minimums Work that does not require special accommodations

How are you found disabled? Your condition meets specific criteria set forth by the Social Security Administration; or Your condition or treatment causes specific limitations; and These limitations can be mental or physical Limitations can result from condition or side effects of treatment Days of work may be missed as a result of treatment Those limitations prevent you from performing your past work; and Those limitations prevent you from being able to performing other work

Getting back to work Working while receiving disability benefits Part-time work with earnings up to $1,070 per month Trial Work period (SSDI only) Up to 9 months of work in a 5 year period (SSDI payments still issued) Extended period of Eligibility Extends 36 months after the trial work period ends Any month in which your earnings drop below permissible levels, you receive your full SSDI check. Expedited Reinstatement Up to 5 years after end of trial work period
