Agenda: Mathematical Problem – Solving Strategies Progression through the K-3 Hands - on Activity Q & A “Problem solving has been defined as what to do when you don’t know what to do.” Crossing the River with Dogs, page 2

Problem - Solving Strategies Look for a pattern Construct a table Make an organized list Act it out Draw a picture Use objects Guess and check Work backward Write an equation Solve a simpler (or similar) problem Make a model

Kindergarten Boys & Girls: There are 4 children in the block center. Some are girls and some are boys. I am wondering how many could be boys and how many could be girls. Use pictures, numbers and words to show your work. Show and tell how you know. Goldfish: The teacher has two fish tanks. She has 3 fish. The teacher wants to put the fish into the two tanks. How many different ways can she put the fish into the fish tanks. Use pictures, numbers, and words. Show and tell how you know.

First Grade Blueberry Muffins: Kimberly starts with 2 blueberries. Every day Kimberly picks 2 blueberries from the tree. She needs 14 blueberries to make muffins. On what day will she have 14 blueberries? Show your work. Explain your thinking.

First Grade How many hands? The children are making a painted collage of their hands. If there are 8 children at 3 tables, what is the greatest number of hands that could be in the picture? Show how you figured it out. How does knowing how to count by 2’s help you solve this problem?

Second Grade Blueberry Muffins: Kimberly is making blueberry muffins. Kimberly starts with 2 blueberries. Every day Kimberly picks 4 blueberries from the tree. She needs 34 blueberries to make muffins. On what day will she have 34 blueberries? Show your work. Explain your thinking.

Third Grade What’s the deal? Michael wants some donuts. He is very cheap and wants to save even the smallest amount of money. He found a coupon for Dunkin Donuts. The coupon was for $1.00 off a dozen donuts. This week they are on sale for $3.50 a dozen but Michael cannot use the coupon. If Michael waits to use his coupon next week the donuts will be $.25 each. Is it cheaper for Michael to buy the donuts this week at that sale price or wait until next week and use his coupon? Show your work. Explain your thinking.
