Free Tutoring for Kids Supplemental Educational Services Revised 3/13/09

Topics What are Supplemental Educational Services (SES) or Free Tutoring? Steps to Free Tutoring. Supporting your child’s participation in Free Tutoring.

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Federal Education Act of 2001 As part of NCLB, Free Tutoring is made available in schools that are in the process of school improvement. The Free Tutoring program gives eligible students in the school extra help in learning math, reading, and writing skills.

Which Students Are Eligible? Students from low-income families who attend Title I schools that have been identified by the Alaska Department of Education as in need of improvement for two years or more.

Steps to Free Tutoring

Step 1: Eligibility Your school district has sent letters notifying parents of eligible children about free tutoring. Included with the letter were an enrollment form and information about approved providers. If you did not receive a letter and feel you are eligible for services, contact your school.

Step 2: Choose a Provider

Step 3: Enroll your child Complete and return the enrollment form that includes your choice of provider to your school office. You will be notified by letter if your child has been enrolled in a program or put on a waiting list.

Step 4: Support your child’s progress Make sure your child attends all sessions. Be sure to ask for progress reports. Set aside time for your child to complete homework assignments. Tutoring is not homework assistance.

Continued … Review your child’s progress with your provider. Talk with your child’s teacher about the tutoring services your child is receiving. If you have questions or feel the provider’s services aren’t helping your child, contact the school to express your concerns.

Tutoring and Homework Tutoring is not homework time. Your child will still need to schedule time to complete homework assignments and prepare for the next day of school.
