2 What is PoE? Ü Power over Ethernet allows ethernet networked user devices to be powered over the same 4-pair UTP that provides the network signal Ü Power is 48 volt DC, up to 15 watts Ü Compatible with all networks, up to Gigabit Ethernet which uses all four pairs for transmission

3 How does PoE work 2 types components in IEEE 802.3af compliant networks Ü Devices that call for, receive, and utilize the power are called Powered Devices (PD). These devices include IP phone sets, IP cameras, wireless access points (APs). Ü Devices that supply power are called Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE). Power can be supplied via the Ethernet or VOIP switch (Endpoint PSE), or by a separate device that resides between the switch and the PD (Midspan PSE). endpoint midspan PD

4 How does PoE work Ü When a PSE is connected to the network it must determine if any PDs are attached to any horizontal cabling channels the PSE is supporting. The PSE uses a process call polling, applying small current limited voltages checking for the presence of a signature characteristic resistance (defined by the 802.3af standard ). Ü Power is supplied to circuits where the signature resistance is detected. Ü PDs can also classify how much power they may require.

6 PoE vs. Power Supplied locally at device Ü Reduced cabling costs. Adding power circuits at the point of need can be a significant expense, This way one cable provides both power and data. Cameras and access points & remote mini hubs can be moved and wired more easily. Ü Reliability associated centralized supplied power. Circuit outage at a desk will take out a VOIP set powered locally. Using uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), Voice over IP (VoIP) telephones can now be deployed without worrying about them not functioning during a power outage.

7 Locating Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) In the Switches Ü POE from the switch. This has been targeted as an additional revenue stream by switch manufactures. Ü It is approximated that 10-15% of projected over 200 million Ethernet ports sold in 2004 included PoE. Ü The typical replacement cycle for switches is 3-5 years. Every time you replace a switch you need to buy the power again. Ü Cooling of PoE in addition to switch elements may further shorten switch life.
