FACT O CPR is a life skill everyone should have. You are most likely to use this skill on a friend or loved one…90% of sudden cardiac arrests (SCAs) happen at home. Getting quick, effective bystander CPR can double or even triple a victim’s chances to survive. The earlier CPR is started the better. Every minute without bystander CPR decreases survival by 10%. O CPR: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

5 Fears Video O Fold a piece of paper so you have 5 areas to take notes. O Throughout the video, we will stop and discuss each of the 5 Fears as they are explained. O Write the name each fear on the paper and take notes on the facts surrounding this fear and/or information about his fear. O We will have an overall discussion once video is over about all 5 Fears.

5 Fears of Performing CPR or using AED Machine The following video is to put students at ease about some of the fears one may have about performing CPR or taking action during an emergency situation. http://www.profirstaid.com/en/training_video /five-fears-part-1

Most people are very reluctant to get involved in providing CPR and First Aid Why? O 1. Lawsuits: O Don't be afraid to try to save a life in need of saving because of the fear of getting sued. Each state has Good Samaritan laws that protect you from liability when you voluntarily render emergency aid to another individual. You cannot hurt someone that is already in danger of dying by doing SOMETHING to save their lives. O Good Samaritan Law O There is a Good Samaritan law in all 50 states that covers you for doing the best job you can do with CPR and the AED, no matter what the outcome is. O It does not keep someone from suing you, but should keep a suit from going forward, as long as you do not accept payment for helping. O Therefore, liability should not be a concern.

Most people are very reluctant to get involved in providing CPR and First Aid Why? 2. Unsure of Skills: Understand that CPR only slows down the progress from clinical death to biological death but will not stop it! We know any number combination during rescue breaths to compressions will help buy time for EMS to use an AED and ALS to administer medications. The numbers are guidelines, not the rule. (Which is part of the reason why Hands-Only CPR has become such a popular alternative to rescue breathing.) 3. Might Hurt or Kill Patient: This goes hand in hand with number two. The person is already dead. How much worse can the patient physically become? Even Hands-Only CPR is better than doing nothing. It will only help the person to do something rather than nothing.

Most people are very reluctant to get involved in providing CPR and First Aid Why? 4. Disease: This fear has been around for some time and can be solved by ordering a Key-Ring or other accessible CPR shield and protective gloves. That way, you're always prepared for the worst of circumstances. Hands-Only CPR may be a good alternative if you don't have personal protective equipment or don't feel comfortable giving rescue breaths. 5. Unsafe Scene: The only fear that rescuers should be afraid of is the fear of an unsafe scene. Do not become another patient yourself. Make sure, if you're going to enter an area to rescue someone, that the surrounding area is safe enough so that you don't become another victim.

Day 1 TOTD Ticket Out the Door O On the back of your 5 Fears paper, answer the following question. O Turn into teacher as your Ticket Out The Door. O What are some of the fears you may have in performing the emergency tasks? Why?

Day 2 O http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/CPRAndE CC/HandsOnlyCPR/DemosandVideos/Demo s-an Videos_UCM_440561_Article.jsp http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/CPRAndE CC/HandsOnlyCPR/DemosandVideos/Demo s-an Videos_UCM_440561_Article.jsp O (approx.. 30 second video with Jennifer Coolidge)

AED = Automated External Defibrillator An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm. If needed, it can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest. AED

AED Information O An AED will not shock someone who does not need to be shocked O You just turn it on and follow the voice prompts and pictures on pads O Once on, never remove pads or turn it off, it will continue to cycle and recheck the victim every 2 minutes, taking you back to CPR each time

AED Awareness Video O Watch the Heart Start AED Training Video O CCSD schools all use the Heart Start AED O http://depts.washington.edu/leartned/defib _HeartStart.php http://depts.washington.edu/leartned/defib _HeartStart.php O approx. 2 minute

AED Locations O Insert map of school and mark locations O Create list of locations O Go on a walk around school to locate AEDs

Just remember… O CPR is a life skill everyone should have. O You are most likely to use CPR on friend or loved one. O 85% of sudden cardiac arrests happen at home. O Bystander CPR can double or triple survival rate. O Every minute without CPR reduces survival by 10%. O You can’t hurt, you can only help!

Day 3 TOTD Ticket Out The Door O 3-2-1 O List 3 things you have learned O List the meanings to the 2 acronyms AED and CPR O List 1 reason why it is important to know Hands Only CPR
