2 A fairly youthful city when compared to older and more historic Polish cities, Warsaw is Poland's progressive capital city and home to an impressive cultural scene, with endless theatres and opera houses. For tourism advice in Warsaw, there are a number of tourist information centres, known as Centrum Informacji Turystycznej. The office located within the Central Train Station is well placed for those arriving by rail and features a number of free magazines, such as the popular 'Welcome to Warsaw', which is sure to be of interest to visitors keen to explore. There are countless ways to spend your time visiting this Polish city, with tourist attractions ranging from 5,000 animals at the Warsaw Zoological Gardens, to gondola rides on the large lake within Lazienki Park. Even during the summer months it is possible to practice your skiing on the huge artificial ski slope Szczesliwice, although it is fair to say that many people come here for the views alone, or to take a ride of the thrilling roller coaster, powered by nothing more than gravity. 3 The Old Town district of Krakow is known as the Stare Miasto and is where many of the most impressive Gothic churches stand, while the Kazimierz area preserves its Jewish past with its many stylish synagogues. Krakow is central in every single way to Polish culture and the city now enjoys a place on the World Heritage List. Take time to explore the city and its many interesting districts. A large proportion of the main tourist attractions reside within Old Town Krakow, such as the famous Planty. Once a long moat surrounding the entire district, the Planty has since been filled in and planted with numerous trees and flowers. Directly west, the Krakow Zoological Gardens contain some 1,500 exotic creatures and were established almost 100 years ago. 4 Lodz made its considerable fortune from its major textile industry and is a relatively youthful city, where no buildings are actually older than 200 years. Located on the Al Kosciuszki, the Lodz Tourist Information Centre (Centrum Informacji Turystycznej) is a good place to begin your visit, or alternatively, take a stroll along the lengthy backbone of the city, the Ulica Piotrkowska, where the most sights, restaurants and shops of any significance are either located along or just a block or two away from. The various tourist attractions within this Polish city appeal to different kinds of visitors, with families always enjoying a day out at Lodz Zoo, or around the simply enormous Lagiewniki Park. Those more interested in the past of Lodz should take a self-guided tour around the city's Jewish Ghetto (Litzmannstadt Ghetto), which suffered terrible losses during the WWII holocaust. One of the best preserved textile mills in the city is the Priest's Mill, which today offers a glimpse into life in the city during its textile boom, while the Grand Theatre (Teatr Wielik) is well suited for opera lovers. 5 Begin your sightseeing in Wroclaw by taking a stroll around the central Rynek, which is surrounded by many beautiful buildings and busy restaurants, whose outside tables fill much of the square during the sunny Polish summer months. The Ostrow Tumski Island is another spot to look for top tourist attractions, being home to a number of breathtaking churches, such as the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Those looking for a spot of green in Wroclaw will find the Botanical Gardens and the beautiful oriental Japanese Gardens within the Szczytnicki Park a must.
