Wait for it…….

Pythagoras was a Greek mathematician and a philosopher, but was best known for his Pythagorean Theorem. He was born around 572 B.C. on the island of Samos. For about 22 years, Pythagoras spent time traveling though Egypt and Babylonia to educate himself. At about 530 B.C., he settled in a Greek town in southern Italy called Crotona. He was the first to teach that the earth was a sphere that revolves around the sun. Pythagoras formed a brotherhood that was an exclusive society devoted to moral, political and social life. This society was known as Pythagoreans.

His students formed a secret society called the Pythagoreans. As well as studying maths, they were a political and religious organisation. Members could be identified by a five pointed star they wore on their clothes.

They had to follow some unusual rules. They were not allowed to wear wool, drink wine or pick up anything they had dropped! Eating beans and meat was also strictly forbidden!

The sum of the squares of each leg of a right angled triangle equals to the square of the hypotenuse. Pythagoras said: “For any right triangle, the sum of the areas of the two small squares is equal to the area of the larger.” a² + b² = c²

Throughout many texts, there are about 400 possible proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem known today. It is not a wonder that there is an abundance of proofs due to the fact that there are numerous claims of different authors to this significant geometric formula. Specifically looking at the Pythagorean Theorem, this unique mathematical discovery proves that there is a limitless amount of possibilities of algebraic and geometric associations with the single theorem.

This is called Pythagoras’ Theorem. c² b² a² c²=a²+b²

1m 8m What is the length of the slope?

1m 8m c b= a= c²=a²+ b² c²=1²+ 8² c²=1 + 64 c²=65 ?

How do we find c? We need to use the square root button on the calculator. It looks like this √ Press c²=65 √, Enter 65 = So c= √ 65 = 8.1 m

Longest side is the hypotenuse, side c (opposite the 90 o angle) The other two sides are the legs, sides a and b Pythagoras developed a formula for finding the length of the sides of any right triangle.
