2 Meet the teachers  Mrs Kirsty Palmer – Monday/Tuesday/Wed  Mrs Sarah Williams – Wed/Thurs/Friday  Mr Mark Wilson  TA Mrs Rachel Shuker

3 Moving into Key Stage 2  Your child is now entering Key Stage 2.  The launch of Curriculum 08 means a move towards a skills based curriculum.  The curriculum is organised through thematic based work, using a skills continuuum.

4 Topics  Autumn Term – History – Romans v Celts  Spring Term – Entrepreneurship  RE – Islam  Science – sound and electricity  Summer – Geography - The Olympic Games  Science - materials

5 The Autumn Term The children will study a new history topic based on enquiry into the lives of the Romans and the Celts in Wales.

6 The Spring Term This term will focus on Technology based topics. The children will have the opportunity to design, make, package and market a range of products.

7 The Summer Term During the Summer term the children will take part in a Geography project celebrating the 2012 Olympic Games. They will develop enquiry based skills and convey their understanding in a range of written forms and through a variety of media.

8 Reading  Reading activities take place in the afternoon.  Children work in groups of 6. Activities are:  group reading using a shared text or Big Book with the class teacher  individual reading with Mrs Shuker  group task, based on work from the group reading session  Playing language games.  There is a timetable for each activity.

9 Group reading  Emphasis is now on reading for meaning  Children will be taught about a range of punctuation  They will be encouraged to use a range of strategies to identify unknown words  They will be encouraged to discuss plot and characters

10 Group reading cont….  They will predict and retell the story  They are encouraged to read with expression and intonation  Their fluency will develop as their confidence rises  The children are grouped by ability to ensure they are studying a suitable text

11 Reading at home  Please can you listen to your child read on a regular basis and then write in their Home/School Links Books  This enables us to see the types of books they are reading at home and how their fluency is developing with you  Please can you help change your child’s book from the library.

12 Reading book colours  Stage 5/6 – Blue  Stage 3/4 – Brown  Stage 2 – Green  After Stage 6, the children move onto orange, then pink, then yellow, red and free readers which they can change as often as possible

13 P.E / Games  Games is on a Thursday.  The children will need dark joggers, trainers, a white T Shirt and a warm jumper for working outside

14 P.E  Indoor P.E is on Monday and the lesson will be led by Mr T. He will teach dance, gymnastics and small ball skills.  The children should be barefoot and will need to wear dark shorts and a white T-shirt.

15 Visits  There has already been a visit to the Caerleon Roman Baths.  Also this term we will visit Castell Henllys – a hill fort in West Wales – in order to compare and contrast the lifestyles of Celt and Roman people.  Spring and Summer terms- still to be arranged

16 Spellings  The children are being taught spellings through focused weekly activities, which will incorporate multi sensory strategies.  Words for tests are brought home on a Monday.  When your child has spellings to learn please will you practise the spelling pattern with them as well as learning the words off by heart  Weekly spelling tests are on a Monday afternoon.

17 BLP  Building Learning Power  An approach to learning developed through the curriculum.  Teaches the children strategies to help their learning.  Learning to Learn books will be sent home each week and returned each week to school.

18 Mathematics and Times Tables  Mathematics is taught every day in ability groups. There will be three classes of approximately 20 children.  Your child will be tested weekly on times tables, beginning with the 10 x tables  Please help your child learn times tables. There are some great websites, including  http://www.teachingtables.co.uk/

19 Health and Hygiene.  The children will be required to bring a labelled water bottle into school which they will need to take home regularly for washing.  Children will use an anti bacterial hand wash before having lunch.
