2 Target Outcomes  An ability to understand, speak, read, & write select vocabulary, phrases, & expressions in Spanish  Recognizing how languages & cultures around the world are similar and different and why, growing multicultural understanding

3  Exploratory Program (FLEX)  Weekly 45 minute periods in specials schedule  School-wide infusion of Spanish learning  Curriculum/instruction per ACTFL standards  Measurement of progress built into the curriculum Basic Features

4  World Language is taking the place of library/media in the specials schedule  Library/media is moving to a flexible rather than fixed schedule  All classes continue to visit the library and get books on a regular basis  Increase opportunities to collaborate with classroom teachers and integrate library/media resources into the curriculum

5  5 Spanish teachers assigned to K-5 schools  Developed a curriculum, grade level scope and sequence, acquired and prepared resources  Introductory assembly programs and visits to classes during the lunch period  Classes for Grades 5 through 2 have started; K and 1 begin this week Update:

10  All grade levels will begin with a modified K-1 curriculum, with adjustments for age/grade  Continue collaborating with grade level teams and specials teacher to build the Spanish learning community in each school  Continue work on refining the curriculum and adding appropriate resources

12 Lesson Demonstration – Calendar  Review of previous vocabulary/structures as well as new are built into lessons  Multi-media resources support communication and comprehension  Attention to all language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing  Culture woven into lesson

13 Communication: Communicate in languages other than English. Cultures: Gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures. Connections: Connect with other disciplines and acquire information Comparisons: Develop insight into the nature of language and culture. Communities: Participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world.

14  Students learn language in each of the three communicative modes. The traditional “four skills” (listening, speaking, reading and writing) are contextualized  Interpersonal mode: Involves both a Listener/Speaker and a Reader/Writer  Interpretive mode: Involves only a Listener/Reader  Presentational mode: Involves only a Speaker/Writer

15  The focus of language learning is communication  Students are engaged in interpreting, creating and negotiating meaning  Language activities are standards-based, student-centered, contextualized and performance-oriented
