THE RISE OF UNIONS

 Rise of big business leads to individual workers losing all bargaining with employers  Because most workers were unskilled, they could be easily replaced  Some workers formed unions in order to act as a group instead of individuals  Unions organized strikes and other forms of protest  Industrialists (Carnegie) used immigrant workers or just closed down factories rather than negotiate with unions

KNIGHTS OF LABOR  Formed: 1869  Hope was to create a single national union by joining together all skilled and unskilled workers  Leadership: Terrence Powderly  Grew rapidly in the 1880s  Knights proved to be too loosely organized  Skilled workers resented being in the same union as unskilled workers  After losing a series of major strikes, the Knights fell apart

KNIGHTS OF LABOR  Demands :  8 Hour work day  High Wages  Safety Codes in factories  Opposed Child Labor  Supported equal pay for women  Supported restrictions on immigration (since they saw immigrants as competitors for their jobs)

AMERICAN FEDERATION OF LABOR (AFL)  Formed: 1881  Hoped to create a powerful union by uniting workers with similar economic interests  Leadership: Samuel Gompers  AFL consisted of separate unions of skilled workers which had joined together in a federation  Participating Craft unions limited their memberships to skilled workers such as carpenters and cigar makers  After losing a series of major strikes, the Knights fell apart

AMERICAN FEDERATION OF LABOR (AFL)  Demands: Mostly limited to economic improvements  Higher Pay  8 Hour work Day  Better Working Conditions  Fought hard to improve members’ job security by seeking Closed Shops (places where only union members could be hired)  Quickly emerged as the principal voice of organized labor  AFL weakened by its continuing exclusion of unskilled workers, who mad up the bulk of the labor force  1910: Less than 5% of American workers were unionized
