Values, Morality and Ethics

Values Our values are qualities or ideas which each of us cares about and considers important. They must be chosen freely, rather than being forced on us. They can be morally or ethically based, or simply based on a want or need.

Values Our values have positive qualities for us, and tend to show up in every aspect of our lives. Values are the elements on which we base our actions, behaviour and decisions. Types of values include: family, professional, national, spiritual.

Morality Morality is one’s individual perception of right and wrong, and good and bad. A moral act is an intentional act that is considered to be right. An immoral act is an intentional act that is considered to be wrong. An amoral act has no bearing on right or wrong.

Morality Give an example of a moral act.

Ethics Ethics is the study of principles that govern how we decide what is right and wrong; deciding between moral principles to determine the best course of action to take. Based on what you value, and your own morality (right/wrong, good/bad), you can consider your options before making an ethical or unethical decision.

Ethics When it comes to making ethical decisions, it boils down to what you should or ought to do. An ethical decision involves choosing the right action over the wrong action. An unethical decision involves intentionally acting in a bad or immoral way.
