National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommend against unprotected exposure of all skin to crude oil, dispersants and other chemicals at the scene. Structural firefighting protective clothing (SFPC) is acceptable skin, foot and head protection in the initial stages of response.
