2  China is an interesting and important place. Its animals are important too. For example the panda is one of China’s many attractions. It has white and black fur and is in the bear family. The Asian elephant is also significant because it has been worshiped for centuries and is still used today for ceremonial and religious purposes. Last but not least is the Chinese zodiac pig. The Chinese zodiac calendar has importance to China. In fact your sign is based on the year you were born. The pig is very important to ancient China and helping others is a true pleasure for the pig. The Importance of Chinese Animals

3  What do some of the animals in China look like? Chinese Animals

4  The panda’s thick coats are white and black all over its ears, eyes, legs, shoulders and muzzles. The the skin color of an Asian elephant is dark grey to brown with patches of pink on its for- head, ears, and base of the trunk and chest. The Chinese zodiac pig is a shade of pink. They are also giving as long as they approve of you. All in all these special animals have specific patterns of colors that prove who they are. The appearance of a panda is very recognizable! 5  The Asian elephant is in danger of extinction in the wild because of loss of habitat and human population. Surviving is a challenging subject that many animals have in common. Some need to make dens like pandas. In fact pandas are also in danger of extinction because of people cutting down their land and food such as bamboo and it is becoming harder and harder to defeat. 6  When a panda is born they are no bigger than a stick of butter. After a while its fur will turn grey then white and black. After six months they stop drinking milk and start munching on bamboo. When the female turns six it can have cubs. When it comes to dying it will get killed by humans, leopards, and jackals and sometimes the young will get killed by yellow throated martens. 7  The life cycle of an elephant can be categorized in three main periods.  The baby stage lasts from birth until the elephant has weaned of its mothers milk. This can be anywhere between five and ten years of age.  The adolescent stage extends from that time that the elephant has weaned until seventeen years of age. Adolescence is the time in which young elephant begin to break from the herd.  Adulthood starts at about eighteen years of age and the elephant has an average life span expectancy of 70 years of age. Generally they only start to mate at about twenty years of age. In fact the elephant life cycle is similar to the human life cycle. What is the Life Cycle of an Elephant?

8  The Chinese zodiac calendar known as the Sheng Xiao is based on a twelve year cycle each year in that cycle is related to an animals sign. It is calculated according to the Chinese lunar calendar. This is a very interesting event in the Chinese New year! The Chinese zodiac animals are the rat, horse, ox, sheep, tiger, monkey, rabbit, rooster, dragon, dog, snake, and pig. In fact over time it was believed the animals of the zodiac were chosen by the Jade emperor. He called all the animals to take part in a contest and the rat won! 9  The Chinese Alligator, Rabbit, and Tiger. Did you know that the alligator is an endemic animal of China? Did you also know that the rabbit is from the Chinese zodiac calendar.
