NetApp 3050 Implementation Steps  Install SAN Fabric and FC Cards (Remove Incompatible Ones.)  Identify File Servers and Shared Directories.  Create New “Shares” and Quotas.  Copy Data During “Quiet Time.”  Re-Map End Users To New Share.  Perform Second Data Copy.  Stop Sharing Original Share.  Perform Final Data Copy.

Services Delivered United Enterprise  Individual Home Directories over CIFS to Students, Faculty, And Staff  Instructional/Classroom Directories with Drop Boxes  Departmental Directories and “Special Projects” Directories  Central NFS Shares for UNIX Environment Robust Backup & Recovery  Departmental Data Uses Snapshots  Online Backup of Enterprise Through NDMP  “Hot Backup” of Oracle Database Using Oracle Module Auto-Support 20 TB as of March, 2007

Next Steps HTTP Web Content via Home Directories WebDAV for Remote Mounting of Home Directories Snapshots for Home Directories Near Line Storage for Archived Data Mirror Across WAN for Disaster Recovery Brick Level Backup of Exchange Mailboxes Cluster Environment with Additional Head Unit

Recommendations To Use “Thin Provisioning” Have Fast Access to Additional Disks. Confirm Firmware Versions from Vendors on Fiber Cards and Fiber Channel Switch for Compatibility. Maintain Separate Storage Areas to Keep Data Transactions Secure. Confirm Compatibility with 3 rd Party Tools. Group Applications Based on Availability Requirements. Use Cross-Platform File Naming Standards. Acquire Extra Disks for Redundancy.

Some Definitions NAS – (Network Attached Storage) is attached to a local area network and assigned an IP Address. This is great when a set of data has a one-to-many ratio with a group of servers which need to access it SAN – (Storage Area Network) is a special purpose high speed network dedicated to storage. This is ideal when a set of data has a one-to-one ratio with a server that needs to access it Parity disk – Parity bits are used as error detecting code, by indicating a number of bits in a given set are odd or even. If a single drive in an array fails, data blocks and a parity block from the remaining working drives can be combined to reconstruct the missing data Spare disk – A hot spare is able to automatically (or manually) replace a failing or failed disk in a RAID configuration FC - (Fiber Channel) A gigabit-speed network technology used for storage networking. Fiber Channel products are available at 1 Gbit/s, 2 Gbit/s and 4 Gbit/s SATA – Serial ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment) standard is a computer bus technology designed for transfer of data to and from Hard Disks and optical drives CIFS – Common Internet File System (previously SMB Server Message Block) provides an authenticated Inter-process communication mechanism NFS – (Network File System) allows a user on a client computer to access files over a network as easily as if the network device was attached directly to its local disks. WAN – (Wide Area Network) A computer network which covers a broad area using routers and/or public communication links. The largest and most well know WAN is the Internet NDMP – (Network Data Management Protocol) A protocol meant to transport data between NAS devices and backup devices. This removes the need for transporting the data through the backup server itself, thus enhancing speed and removing load from the backup server WebDAV – (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning ) Provides functionality to create, change and move documents on a remote server. This is useful, among other things, for authoring the documents which a web server serves, but can also be used for general web-based file storage that can be accessed from anywhere.
