4 Rainwater harvesting Rainwater harvesting is the accumulation and deposition of rainwater for reuse before it reaches the aquifer. Uses include water for garden, water for livestock, water for irrigation, etc. In many places the water collected is just redirected to a deep pit with percolation. The harvested water can be used as drinking water as well as for storage and other purpose like irrigation.

5 What is Water Harvesting
In the state of Tamil Nadu, rainwater harvesting was made compulsory for every building to avoid ground water depletion. In Rajasthan, rainwater harvesting has traditionally been practiced by the people of the Thar Desert. At present, in Pune (in Maharashtra), rainwater harvesting is compulsory for any new society to be registered.

6 How much water can be harvested?
Consider your own building with a flat terrace area of 100 sq m. Assume the average annual rainfall in your area is approximately 600 mm (24 inches). In simple terms, this means that if the terrace floor is assumed to be impermeable, and all the rain that falls on it is retained without evaporation, then, in one year, there will be rainwater on the terrace floor to a height of 600 mm. Area of plot = 100 sq. m. (120 square yards) Height of the rainfall = 0.6 m (600 mm or 24 inches) Volume of rainfall over the plot = Area of plot x height of rainfall Assuming that only 60 per cent of the total rainfall is effectively harvested Volume of water harvested = 36,000 liters (60,000 liters x 0.6)

Teeth brushing < 3.8 liters, especially if water is turned off while brushing. Hands/face washing 3.8 liters shaving 3.8 liters Dishwasher 15 to 38 liters /load, depending of efficiency of dishwasher Dishwashing by hand: 76 liters. Clothes washer 95 liters. /load for newer washers. Older models use about 152 liters. per load. Toilet flush 11.4 liters. Most all new toilets use 6 liters per flush, but many older toilets used about 15.2 liters. Drinking of water 5 liters./ Day per person

15 Rainwater harvesting As a guide to collection capacity, consider that each 1 mm. of rain = 1 liter of water per square meter of roof area, then allow 15% water wastage.
