2 Rhyming  Rhyming can be one of the more fun lessons to learn.  The words look similar like “pan” and “can”  The words will sound very similar with the phonemes in it.  Phonemes are the individual sounds that makes up the sound.  Practice:  Identify the rhyming word that rhymes with house…..  A: Mouse B: Gross C: Weight

3 The sound W  The letter W can substitute for the vowel u.  When W acts as a vowel it will follow an A, E, or O.  Examples are like paw, new and grow.  W can act as its own sound.  Example of this would be whick

4 The letter Y  The letter Y can sometimes substitute for the letter I. When it does do this, it is considered a vowel.  The letter Y can appear as the only vowel in a syllable.  This is words like:  Why, Cry, and Gym

5 Short sounds with a brev  A brev is a half circle that goes above the short vowel sound.  Gym would have the brev above the y sound since it is acting as an I sound  Other examples with the short vowel sounds are cat, dog, log, and pick.  Which word has the short vowel sound tick or might?  The answer is tick

6 The long vowel sound with a macron  A long vowel sound is marked with a macron.  A macron is a long straight line over the vowel.  This would be in words like might, glide, and ride.  All these words have a long I sound.  Which word is a long vowel sound:  Meet or clip?
