3 PRINT xx — PRINT MEDIA TOP — DRD 3 Most of what makes printed material effective and appealing happens beneath the viewer’s conscious awareness. We turn to boilerplate and prefab solutions in the belief that people don’t really care about organization and appearance. Which is true, to a point. But not caring does not mean we don’t respond. How you speak and how you show: it counts. Style matters. PRINT MEDIA annual report posters brochures theatrical EDITORIAL INFO DESIGN DIGITAL & ONLINE WRITTEN CLICKED

14 PRINT xx — EDIT TOP — DRD 3 PRINT MEDIA EDITORIAL grant writing journal articles policy documents INFO DESIGN DIGITAL & ONLINE WRITTEN CLICKED What I am calling “editorial” is, for the most part, written work done in collaboration with others, with my role sometimes purely editorial, and sometimes more. For many peer-reviewed journal articles my contribution was mainly copy-editing; for others, as in the examples here, the line between editing and co-authorship is blurred. As radiology policy library administrator, I was responsible for review and revision of existing documents and also for guiding staff clinicians in the drafting of new policies. Grant applications usually involved in providing editorial support, but sometimes, as here, I was responsible for both the initiation and drafting of grant proposals— most of which, I happily can say, were funded.

Helping him get this, and other articles, ready for publication felt more like a privilege than a job. (2012, American Journal of Roentgenology) The accuracy of imaging technology brings new responsibilities: when a study has been ordered in advance of surgery, what do we do when unexpected conditions turn up on the imaging? (2009, American Journal of Roentgenology) Sometimes radiologists become like map-makers of old, sharing the careful work of charting—here, not of tropical reefs, but the complex structures of a complex joint. (2009, American Journal of Roentgenology) When news broke of serious radiation-safety breaches at a prominent Los Angeles hospital, I worked with the D-H Radiology Chair on frank responses for the local community, including this Valley News op-ed. 17 PRINT xx EDIT policy top I II III IV V VI VII As part of the Dartmouth-Hitchock committee on policy initiation and maintenance processes, I played a leading role in drafting the new office’s mission statement. Shown is my original draft, much of which is retained in the final adopted document. policy office mission So. You start a group. Everyone’s excited. Everyone thinks they know what the purpose of the group is. You get to work. And it turns out there are a lot of different expectations. Time to get something down on paper. Here’s what we came up with. IRIS mission statement As manager of the Radiology Department’s Policy and Procedures Library, much of what I did was maintenance. The rest was helping clinicians draft and revise policy documents for clarity, logic and consistency—and just possibly, make a big difference in some patient’s life. breast MRI policy Why must every instance of bringing in an outside theatre director for a new show involve hours of debate? Three members of The Parish Players’ board got together to figure out a better way, and this is what we came up with. guest directors policy The nurses, physicians and technicians of the diagnostic X-ray unit are often the first to see signs of possible child abuse. Among the many difficult issues this raises, is the question of what to tell parents and caregivers. Working with the trauma team, we came up with this. pediatric trauma Who could possibly care? Think again. Mundane clinical procedures often present a serious potential for disease transmission. Here, I worked to help the ultrasound division find clarity and order on the process of making sure those ultrasound “wands” stay clean. ultrasound transducer cleaning The family agreed that the deceased’s wishes should be paramount. 19 PRINT xx — INFO DESIGN TOP — DRD 3 PRINT MEDIA EDITORIAL INFO DESIGN text-based image-based charts DIGITAL & ONLINE WRITTEN CLICKED There’s not much that new in the idea that good design matters. It mattered in 1869 when Charles Minard made his map of the French army’s disastrous march to Russia. It matters now. It matters even if no one knows it. You stay or you go, and what you do may have nothing to do with the inherent value of content. Information design is about making it easy to stay.

You build it correctly, or you stay an Assistant Professor forever. Stressful at best, the periodic ritual of CV-updating was exacerbated by the institution’s reliance on out-of-date and illogical templates. At the urging of our department chair and the Dean’s Office, I spearheaded the effort to analyze and revise Geisel School’s CV template. 1. problem and scope 2. I was brought in to devise a better way. Collectively, the medical imaging research capability of the Dartmouth community was impressive—or was, if you could piece it all together. Here, for the first time, a big-picture look. When DHMC imaging technologists and physicians came together to discuss ways to better address patient concerns about radiation safety, Image Right / Image Safe (“IRIS”) was born. There was plenty of enthusiasm, but too little sense of concrete mission and scope. At The Sharon Academy, everyone does theatre. Casts get huge. Rehearsal time is limited. Attention spans are short. Kids, parents, and faculty can all get frustrated. So how do you schedule a show like our musical adaptation of “Gump” with a cast of 60? Answer: very carefully! A good starting point for the imaging-safety awareness group was to agree on some good, clear and concise descriptions of the different modalities and the ways in which we framed our decision-making on which to use.
