1 Plants & Trees Revised by Miss Pflaumer

2 A plant’s life cycle starts with a seed.
Inside the seed is a tiny new plant. The outside of the seed has a special covering called a seed coat. The seed leaf has a bit of food or energy to help the seed to germinate.

3 When the seed gets the right amount of water, sun, and air, it can begin to grow.
When it starts to grow, it is “germinating”.

4 If conditions remain just right, after a time, the little seed will sprout.
The little sprout is called a “seedling”. The sprout will grow to look like the plant it came from.

5 As the sprout continues to develop, it will grow roots, a stem, leaves, and flowers which will form more seeds At this stage, the life cycle of the plant begins again.

6 It Starts With a Seed. From a seed, a small root grows down into the soil. Then, the stem grows up toward the surface of the soil. Soon, the stem breaks through the soil. When this happens, it is called a sprout.

7 The Cycle Continues Later, leaves begin to form on the plant stem.
Now it is called a seedling and can make its own food. Finally, the seedling develops into a plant which will look like the plant it came from.

8 Vocabulary holds up the plant
hold the plant in the soil and take in water and minerals make seeds take in air and use light to make food grows around seeds for protection grow into new plants a powder which makes seeds grow inside a flower Shows how a living thing grows, lives, and dies H Life cycle ___ Leaves ___ Stem ___ Roots ___ Seeds ___ Fruit ___ Pollen ___ Flowers___ D A B F E G C

9 What Am I ? I take in mineral and water from the soil. What am I?
ROOTS I allow water to travel up to the leaves and flowers and support them as well. What am I? STEM

10 What Am I ? I use sunlight and oxygen to make sugary food for the plant. What am I? LEAVES I make the seeds to allow the plant to reproduce. What am I? FLOWER

11 What Am I ? I form around the seed for protection, and I’m sometimes edible. What am I? FRUIT When a plant starts to grow, you say it doing this. What is it? GERMINATING

12 What Is It? Bees, wind, animals, and water help plants with this important process. What is it? POLLINATION When a sprout begins to have leaves, you call it this. What is it? SEEDLING

13 What Is It? This is around the seed when it’s planted and has some food/energy in it to help the seed to begin to grow. What is it? SEED LEAF The main two types of trees. What are they? CONIFEROUS & DECIDUOUS

14 What Am I ? I am a tree that loses its leaves during the fall and hibernates during the winter. What am I? DECIDUOUS or BROAD-LEAF I am the part of the tree that protects the trunk. What am I? BARK

15 What Am I ? I am a tree which has short sharp needles and forms cones around its seeds. What am I? CONIFER or EVERGREEN I am the hardest wood in the tree trunk and give it its sturdiness. What am I? HEARTWOOD

16 What Am I ? I am the living layer of cells that makes a layer of wood and bark each year. What am I? CAMBIUM Water flows up and down me to the branches and leaves as a stem does for a plant. I’m part of the trunk. What am I? SAPWOOD

17 What Am I ? I’m the word Dr. Rubino taught Miss Pflaumer which tells you why the plant in the closet grew more quickly at the beginning of our study. What am I? ETIOLATION I am the process of a plant making its food and releasing oxygen. What am I? PHOTOSYNTHESIS

18 Identification You need to be able to draw and label the following parts of a plant. SEEDS FLOWER STEM LEAVES ROOTS

19 Identification You need to be able to draw and label the following parts of a tree trunk. HEARTWOOD BARK SAPWOOD CAMBIUM

20 Written Assessment Finally, you will write a paragraph or paragraphs telling me as much as you know about plants. You are allowed to use any of the pages in your “Plant Folder” to help you. Make sure you include the parts of trees and plants as well as their life cycles.
