Review with students the understanding of analogies and how they function as comparisons of the similar aspects between two different things. State to students how metaphors and similes also function as comparisons. Verbally explain to students how metaphors use descriptive phrases to imply comparisons. Provide several examples and then ask students to create a metaphor to compare the “waves of an ocean” to something descriptive in nature. Verbally explain how students can transfer this new knowledge to creating similes by using the words “like” and “as” in their metaphors.

Each member of an expert group will then return to their prospective home groups to share their analysis.
