Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 OPTIONS FOR ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO PUBLICATION Microsoft Powerpoint Adobe Acrobat Macromedia Director openOffice Present (free) SLIDY (still in development) DVD Authoring

Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 OPTIONS FOR ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO PUBLICATION Microsoft Powerpoint Pros –Easy to learn and use –Can integrate media elements –Relatively Cheap ($86 with Office) –Can use hypertext (text linked across multiple documents) –Multiplatform, Mac and PC

Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 OPTIONS FOR ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO PUBLICATION Microsoft Powerpoint Cons –Media use between platforms can be unpredictable. –Packaging for CD’s is improved, but still unpredictable without lengthy process to expand code on each playback machine. –Code become very large in size as the project grows. –Difficult to Template multiple pages (structure is fixed and controlled by Microsoft) –Not easily extensible

Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 OPTIONS FOR ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO PUBLICATION Adobe Acrobat Pros –Can use hypertext (text linked across multiple documents) –Can contain media elements –Multiplatform, Mac, PC, Unix

Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 OPTIONS FOR ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO PUBLICATION Adobe Acrobat Cons –Not easy to learn and use –Media Elements and Code should be authored on Mac hardware for true multi-platform compatibility –Moderately Expensive: $159

Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 OPTIONS FOR ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO PUBLICATION Macromedia Director –Same basic Pros and Cons as Adobe Acrobat, much more expensive and greater learning curve (note: Adobe acquired Director last fall)

Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 OPTIONS FOR ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO PUBLICATION HTML Pros –Somewhat easy to learn and use –Can integrate many different media elements –FREE - $$ –Can use hypertext (text linked across multiple documents) –Multiplatform, Mac, PC, UNIX –Perhaps the most extensible choice (i.e.; same code used for the process portfolio can be used for job hunting)

Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 OPTIONS FOR ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO PUBLICATION HTML Cons –Not an integrated environment for development (must use several different programs)

Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 What does a portfolio look like? Running from the web Running from the computer Running from the CD The Structure

Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 What tools will I need? nVu (http://www.nvu.com/download.html) Image Editor –Photoshop Elements ($69) –GIMP (free) –GIMPshop (free) Sound Editor –Sony Sound Forge Studio ($69) –Audacity (free) Video Editor –Premiere Elements ($69) –Movie Maker (free) PDF Creator –Adobe Acrobat ($189) –PrimoPDF (free) –openOffice (free) /complete OFFICE suite/

Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 How do I start? Trim and clean-up the audio, video, photographic, and other artifacts (6-10 hours) Start customizing the templates based on your preferences (6- 10 hours)

Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 Tutorials for Software http://music.udel.edu/deptforms/

Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 How do I publish to CD? Bring all of your finished resources to the Microlab Make an appointment with Bud Clark to learn how to use the “autorun” software

Charles Clark  Department of Music University of Delaware  Newark, DE 19716 Common Mistakes Computer systems are case sensitive, create a scheme and stick to it. Computer systems treat the “space” character differently…DO NOT USE SPACES IN FILENAMES! The template instructions will specify the sizes for images that you need to create. Remember, the average screen size is 800x600, keep the size of your pictures at least less than a quarter of the screen, 200x150.
