Subject wise Classification of Books in the Library What is the Dewey Decimal System? It is a standard system of Classifying books according to their subject developed by Melvil Dewey in 1876. This system organizes books on library shelves in a specific and repeatable order that makes it easy to find any book and return it to its proper place. The books are given Class numbers from the DDC schedule and arranged on the shelves accordingly.

How will you locate books and find information in your Library? Through Call Numbers by which all books are arranged on the shelves. WHAT IS A CALL NUMBER? It is a 3 digit Class number given to books according their subjects, using the DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification System) along with the Author mark. (Eg. 001.9 a book on Controversial knowledge) What is an Author mark ? It indicates the first three letters of the surname of the book’s Author (Eg. Dup for John Dupont)

How the books are shelved:, How the books are shelved: left-to-right, top-to-bottom That means you start at the on the top shelf and move to the That means you start at the left on the top shelf and move to the right until the shelf ends.

How will you find books in the library easily? LIBRARY CATALOGUE Simple – Just use our LIBRARY CATALOGUE What is a Catalogue ? A Catalogue simply means a ‘List of Items’ arranged in a specific manner. A Library Catalogue therefore is a list of Books and all other Library materials like Story Books, Picture Books, Charts, and even AV items like Cds, DVDs etc.

Muktangan Library Catalogue is an Online Database of all books and other materials available in the library The Catalogue is created on a simple Database on an application called MICROSOFT ACCESS ( which is very similar to EXCEL) You can search books by author, title, subject or Keyword and even publisher All that you have to do is follow some simple steps given below to get any book or whatever you want

Click on Library Catalogue on the Desktop of your computer Click on ‘Books’ in the Table that you see Now you will be able to see the entire Catalogue All you have to do is to ‘Right Click’ on any of the columns Author, Title, Subject, Publisher etc. and type out your query in the ‘Filter Space’ provided Now you ‘ll see only those books which you may want Just note down the ‘CALL NO.’ of whatever book you want to read and find it on the shelves (Hope you remember Books are shelved according to Call Nos.) Now you are ready to use the Library !!!

But Wait- Before using the LIBRARY, it is necessary to follow some basic ‘Rules’ to get maximum benefits for yourself. Observe Silence (Talking in whispers is allowed! ) Do not change the arrangement of books & other library materials. Eating is not allowed in the library. L i b r a r y R u l e s

Always ask the Librarian to issue books to you and also return books on time. Other wise sorry you have to pay fine. Many more Library services are at your disposal – Just ask the Librarian. A Copy of all Library procedures is put up on the Display board- Please read carefully. If the books are not returned within a specified time it will be viewed seriously and a fine will be charged as per the rules. The user is responsible for care of books and other library materials taken out of the library. Hope you enjoy your Library experiences. The Librarian is there to serve you & you only
