3 Clinical Rotations I Health Science Clinical Rotations is designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. This course offers the opportunity for students to observe various hospital units such as: labor & delivery, operating room, emergency room and other patient care areas at North Hills Hospital. The student will learn basic healthcare skills and examine a variety of healthcare careers..

4 Patient Care Technician Clinical Rotations II The Certified Patient Care Technician assists doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals in providing direct patient care in a variety of healthcare environments. As a CPCT, you may perform some or all of the following tasks: –Provide basic patient care including bathing, feeding, toileting and ambulating patients –Acquire and distribute patient care supplies –Change bed linens and process dirty linens properly –Perform safety checks to keep patient rooms clean and clutter – free –Maintain clear paths in hallways clear and return equipment that is no longer in use –Obtain EKG readings –Perform phlebotomy procedures Benefits to obtaining a Patient Care Technician Certification may include: more job opportunities, an increased pay scale, job security, and increased subject matter expertise

5 HOSA, Future Healthcare Professionals.HOSA is a student-led professional association for healthcare. It is endorsed by the US Department of Education and is an integral component of Health Science classes. HOSA develops future leaders for the health care delivery system. 6 Supplies 1 Composition Notebook 1 Folder or binder to organize assignments 1 pack of 100 count index cards 1 box of Kleenex or 1 roll of paper towels

7 Grading 30% Major test or project grade. 30% Daily grades which include quizzes, class participation and assignments. 40% Clinical Rotation Grade is made up of skills checklist, journals and unit assignments.

8 Late/Missed Assignments Please make arrangements with me if an assignment is not submitted on time. Your grade will be logged as a 0 until the assignment is submitted. Point deductions for late assignments are as follows: –1 day late: 10 points off – 2 days late: 20 points off – After 2 nd day: highest possible grade 70%

9 Clinical Expectations Students must be dressed in BCTAL scrubs and closed-toed, non-skid shoes. Undershirts or jackets must be white or black. Artificial nails or chipped nail polish are not permitted. Students are expected to remain in their assigned unit for the entire time. No cell phone use allowed in the clinical area.

10 Program Cost- $100-115 Scrubs with Embroidery $22.50 each (2 sets) Polo $20 HOSA dues $30 CPR certification $5 Flu Vaccine $15 or documentation that you have received the shot for this flu season *** Second Year PCT students- Uniform Patch- cost TBD

11 Parent Night- Clinical I Wednesday-3 th at 6:00 pm in the BCTAL Omni Room Parent Night is held to provide parents with information about the program. Mandatory release forms will be signed. These forms are posted on my website; please review these forms prior to Parent Night. Payment for class fees are to be submitted at the beginning of class- Fees due by 9/5

14 BCTAL First Friday Open House August 29 th from 4pm-6pm Meet BCTAL staff, faculty and administration Tour the school Open to all students, parents, community members Parking passes and Student ID will be available Hot dogs and popcorn will be served

15 BCTAL Expectations No Bells! Must wear BCTAL IDs at all times –$10 Student parking at the South end –$10 parking pass Follow school dress codes- NO HATS Do not move the furniture in hallways The furniture at the entrance is for guests only

16 Introductions Write 3-4 sentences about: Introduce yourself (school, grade level and activities) Why you are taking Clinical Rotations? Which area(s) of the medical field are you interested in pursuing?
