2 Aims: To understand the role and responsibilities of a young leader, and what this means for our work with children and young people To be familiar with relevant sections of ‘A Safe Church’ To have developed insights into handling concerns. The Diocese of Southwark A Safe Church

5 What does it mean to be a leader? Being someone people respect Being a role model in every context Looking after people, keeping them safe Being in a position of trust Acting loco in parentis The Diocese of Southwark A Safe Church

6 Some new terms: What does safeguarding mean? o Promoting the welfare.. o Keeping safe from harm, such as illness, abuse or injury o Making sure risks of harm to welfare are minimised o Taking appropriate action to address concerns about welfare Safeguarding is first about keeping children safe but secondly about protecting ourselves from false allegations. What is child protection? o Protecting from mistreatment, abuse and harm. The Diocese of Southwark A Safe Church

7 Safe or unsafe? Legal or Illegal? Ok or Not ok? A father bathes with his five year old daughter An 18 year old drives a 12 year old home from youth group and takes a long detour to carry on a conversation they are having A mother slaps her daughter with a slipper A 14 year old baby-sits for her 5 year old sister A 23 year old youth leader starts dating a 14 year old and is on MSN to them as late as 3am some nights Siblings aged 8 and 10 years return home to an empty house after school each night until their dad comes home A youth leader has provocative photos of themselves on their Facebook page The Diocese of Southwark A Safe Church

8 Who counts as a child? o All children and young people under the age of 18 count as a child in terms of safeguarding and need to be kept safe. The Diocese of Southwark A Safe Church

9 A Safe Church is a manual to help Churches in the Southwark area which we are in, keep children, young people and vulnerable adults safe. The Diocese of Southwark A Safe Church

It’s raining and a 12 year old in the youth group asks you for a lift home A young person is crying and turns to you for a hug and is slow to let go You’re in the changing rooms at a swimming pool and one of the other leaders starts taking photos, what do you do? A parent comes up to you demanding to know why a 23 year old would be ‘Friends’ with their daughter on Facebook and why you can’t get friends your own age. A friend wants to go for a quick drink with you to celebrate end of exams before you head on to the youth social that night – what do you order? The Diocese of Southwark A Safe Church
