2 How ELLs Feel… It’s important to remember that whatever the level your ELLs are, English is still their second language and sometimes will still struggle with the language. It takes people on average 5-7 years to acquire a second language when immersed.

6 Vocabulary Strategies continued… Build background  Share experiences  talk and share  PowerPoint with pictures  Relate to students, to media, to world, and then to subject area Consistency  Use the newly introduced word through various contexts  Let them hear it over and over, and then when you introduce a synonym use both of the words and slowly wean them off of the old word and use the new word
