Network File Storage Project James Madison University Information Technology February 2011

 The current network storage functions provided by Novell NetWare will be replaced with a solution from Microsoft  Existing data and access permissions will be copied to the new system Network File Storage Upgrade February 2011 James Madison University Information Technology

 Mission critical system  Five years since last upgrade  Aging hardware  Disk space is full Why Upgrade? February 2011 James Madison University Information Technology

Benefits  Quota increase  Approximately doubling capacity for each college and administrative division  Additional 5 GB quota for each department  Users get 3 GB quota separate from their department  Ability to add additional disk space as needed  No more Novell NetWare client  No client is necessary to access the new network file storage February 2011 James Madison University Information Technology

Benefits (Continued)  Drive mapping consolidation  In Windows, the N: drive will provide access to ALL network file storage  Anti-virus scanning  All files will automatically be scanned for viruses and malware February 2011 James Madison University Information Technology

Changes  Accessing data  Windows  Single drive letter for all data ( N:)  J, K, L, and M drives go away  Macintosh  Mac users connect to one or more of the new servers/volumes in a similar way as they do today February 2011 James Madison University Information Technology

Changes (continued)  Personal folders ▫Personal folders (identified by e-ID) no longer reside within the departmental folder ▫Personal folders are arranged alphabetically by e-ID as follows: WindowsMacintosh N:\UserA-F\e-IDIT-DATA1.ad.jmu.edu/data/UserA-F/e-ID N:\UserG-L\e-IDIT-DATA1.ad.jmu.edu/data/UserG-L/e-ID N:\ UserM-R\e-ID IT-DATA2.ad.jmu.edu/data/UserM-R/e-ID N:\UserS-Z\e-IDIT-DATA2.ad.jmu.edu/data/UserS-Z/e-ID February 2011 James Madison University Information Technology

Impacts to Windows Users  All references to drives J, K, L, or M will need to be modified to reference the N drive: ▫Desktop shortcuts ▫Microsoft Office: Default file locations, Recently used list ▫Desktop applications ▫Scripts ▫Databases ▫Embedded links ▫Documentation ▫Direct references to server names, for example NWDATA1, NWDATA2, NWDATA3 February 2011 James Madison University Information Technology

New Look February 2011 James Madison University Information Technology

Impacts to Macintosh Users  All references to server/volume names will need to be modified to reference the new servers/volumes (IT-DATA1, IT-DATA2, IT- DATA3) ▫Desktop shortcuts ▫Microsoft Office: Default file locations, Recently used list ▫Desktop applications ▫Scripts ▫Databases ▫Embedded links ▫Documentation February 2011James Madison University Information Technology
