SECTION 3 CHANGES IN TEMPERATURE AND PHASE Chapter 10

Specific Heat Capacity Specific heat is the energy required to change the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1  C at constant pressure. Specific heat is related to energy transferred, mass and temperature change by this equation:

Determining Specific Heat Capacity Calorimetry is used to determine specific heat.

Specific Heat Quantities

Guided Practice Open Books to Pg. 373 Sample 10C

SECTION 4 CONTROLLING HEAT Chaper 10

Thermal Conduction Thermal conduction is the transfer of energy as heat through a material by particle collisions. Substances that rapidly transfer energy as heat are called thermal conductors.  Examples : Metals Substances that slowly transfer energy as heat are called thermal insulators.  Examples : asbestos, cork, ceramic, cardboard, fiberglass

Methods of Energy Transfer Convection – displacement of cold matter by hot matter Radiation – use of electromagnetic radiation to reduce internal energy
