Innovations in low-cost GHG estimation methods Investment Days 16-17 Dec 2014 Kaisa Karttunen MICCA

Background 1.Principles for Responsible Agricultural Investments 6.v. “Taking measures as appropriate, to reduce and/or remove greenhouse gas emissions” http://www.fao.org/cfs/cfs- home/resaginv/en/ http://www.fao.org/cfs/cfs- home/resaginv/en/ 2. World Bank GHG accounting guidance for agriculture investment projects May 2014: Ex Act http://www- wds.worldbank.org/external/default/WDSContentServer/WDSP/IB/2014/09/05/000442464_ 20140905143609/Rendered/PDF/903690WP0Box380lture0Guidance0GHG0.pdf http://www- wds.worldbank.org/external/default/WDSContentServer/WDSP/IB/2014/09/05/000442464_ 20140905143609/Rendered/PDF/903690WP0Box380lture0Guidance0GHG0.pdf 3. GEF Technical working group: Propose a new GEF GHG accounting methodology for the estimation of the CC mitigation impact of projects related to LULUCF by April 2015

GHG estimation Different data, estimation tools and methods for different purposes Cost vs. accuracy Need for data and emission factors (EF), because consistent GHG quantification helps farmers, governments, policymakers and businesses make more informed decisions Data and EF needed also for setting emission baselines, targets and indicators at the project/programme level Reducing GHG quantification costs is critical also to prioritize agriculture practices and assess their climate-smartness Innovative, low cost approaches for collecting, sharing and using data are an immediate priority

The way forward Getting and sharing data Use and harmonize existing data collection tools, e.g. household and agriculture surveys Target of GHG emission measurements to maximize their usefulness Outsource to the crowd Geo-Wiki; combine visual data with cloud-based processing services to support in-country experts Collect Earth Share through global databases: FAOSTAT; MAGGnet; EFDB; Global Soil Databases; Global Firedata; Livestock Life Cycle Data…… Estimating data and emissions Calibrate process models for multiple systems - will reduce data needs later Use simple calculators: Ex-ACT, Cool Farm Tool. For selection see http://www.fao.org/tc/exact/review-of-ghg-tools-in-agriculture/en/ http://www.fao.org/tc/exact/review-of-ghg-tools-in-agriculture/en/ Use proxies: Faecal NIRS, SF6 for methane (livestock) Consider the needs of modeling when collecting field data The presentations of the CCAFS-MICCA/FAO workshop 10/2014 http://www.fao.org/climatechange/micca/87844/en/ http://www.fao.org/climatechange/micca/87844/en/

Having a climate-smart approach? Challenge and opportunity considering productivity, adaptation and mitigation data needs together
