Pre-workshop session Poitiers, july 1 st 2015 Pre-workshop session Poitiers, july 1 st 2015

Eye and Pen works with tablets 2 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France LCD tablets are screen display and tablet at the same time

What tablet for which usage ? L iquid C rystal D isplay tablets:  record eye movements while writing / drawing  manipulate feedback (time, size, masking, etc.) Classic tablets:  more “ecological” context  Higher sampling rate and resolution 3 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

It is called EYE and Pen: what about eye mouvements while writing ? Let’s play with an eyetracker… 4 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

Even if Windows detects and use a tablet when plugged, it may not be enabled in Eye and Pen if the driver has not been properly installed. This driver allows access to extended functions and data of the device. E.g. sampling rate in Windows is max. 133 Hz, with Wintab it can be 200 Hz. Always download and install the lastest version of your tablet driver from the vendor web site A common mistake 6 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

Wacom tablet basic settings Maximum sampling rate (required for Eye and Pen v.1) 7 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

EPKeys (an automation tool) Eye and Pen (main software) NetSync client (use Eye and Pen as a network managed acquisition host) Starting Eye and Pen 9 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

Configure the tablet as an acquisition device 10 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

Tablet options No tablet Wintab32 tablet driver (Wacom, etc.) Tablet PC computer (internal tablet) Select the tablet device On tablet selection, these fields are automatically filled. They can be manually edited. Do not record successive samples with same coordinates and pressure level by default: checked for Wintab32 devices (but LCD tablets may use screen coordinates system) unchecked for Tablet PC Hint: in case of error, writing will be "upside-down" 11 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

Testing the device Move the pen around on the tablet. Drawing should display on screen. Coordinates and pressure values changes as pen moves. Select menu Device tests | tablet | Visual 12 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

1. Select menu File | Acquisition | Simple 2. Type in a name for the participant 3. Click on the ”Go” button to start recording Ticking this box will prevent from using an already existing participant ID Performing a Simple acquisition 14 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

Performing a Simple acquisition Write on the paper with the inking pen When finished, press the pentip in the area labelled “End” 15 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

19 (or “how magic works”) July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

A tablet area can be associated with an action Frame origin: coordinates X =0, y= 0 A zone is an area of the tablet defined by its coordinates 20 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

Up to 2 triggers can be fully customized (zone and associated picture). The acquisition is ended when the participant presses the pentip into a special trigger zone: “end”. A user defined area on the tablet. When the participant presses the pentip in this area, an action is triggered. Only the “End” trigger zone is required. In Simple, action can only be to display a picture. what is “Trigger zone” ?!? A tablet area can be associated with an action 21 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

Press pen tip here to display the picture. When lifting up the pen, picture is “hidden” Press pen tip here when finished Trigger zones example 22 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

o Tick when using LCD tablet (ensure visual feedback) o Untick for most tablet paradigm using inking pen o Can be set/removed (by design) to manipulate visual feedback Inking pen Classic pen Show / hide writing on screen 24 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

25 July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

Eye and Pen supports various picture file formats: BMP, EMF, GIF, ICO, JPG, WMF. BMP file format is recommended because it is not compressed, therefore loading time is shorter because there is no calculation to uncompress.  Pictures are mostly independent from system (no typefont issues). Use pictures as visual stimuli because … 26  Can be prepared in advance (content will not be modified “unexpectedly”) with simple tools like MS-paint.  “Simple” recording only display pictures. The bigger (width / height) and the greater the number of colors the picture has, the longer it will take to load and display. July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France

27 Data acquisition and system resources Recording data in real time requires the computer to be 100% available. Evidence suggests that this is not the case of a computer running Microsoft Windows. Disable:  antivirus software  automated updates  on-line chat applications Unplug or deactivate unnecessary devices (network adapter / WiFi, …) Themes and effects may create unforeseeable system response delays: Switch to "classic mode” and turn off Windows themes, Aero, etc. July 1 st 2015 Mshs, University of Poitiers, France
