2 ESL @ UC Center for ESL (CESL) Serves students who have been admitted into academic programs (and part-time nonmatriculated students); All courses carry university credit (3 credits pr course); in A&S and CoB, they count as FL credit or free electives; Students may take 1-12 credits per term; Visas cannot be issued for full-time study in CESL;

3 Placement into courses is based on the ESL Placement Test (ENPT), taken by any international student who does not place into ENGL courses on the basis of SAT scores; TOEFL or IELTS scores; Offers both graduate and undergraduate courses; Also responsible for administering the Oral English Proficiency Test (OEPT) for International Graduate Assistants.

4 Communiversity, in collaboration with CESL, also offers several pre-academic ESL courses, including TOEFL preparation, for nonmatriculated students

5 English Language Services (ELS) Proprietary language school affiliated with UC; Provides intensive English to non-, pre-, and conditionally-admitted students; Courses do not carry university credit; Issues visas specifically for the study of ESL.

12 18 ESL 1075 Improving Pronunciation Based on your communication with the student, you may place into 1075 if the student has –Completed 1071; –Scored a 17 or higher on the TOEFL speaking subscore; or –Scored a 5.0 or higher on the IELTS speaking subscore

13 Students with No Scores May be coming from ELS, with which we have an agreement to admit without test scores after the student has completed level 12. May be due to cosmically unknown factors; contact me.

14 Additional Course Options Note: ESL 1076 (US Communication and Culture I) is required of incoming international freshmen in the Lindner College of Business. Students in other Colleges are permitted to register as well.

15 ESL1077: Strategies for Academic Success This course is designed to enhance student skills utilizing techniques for effective listening, note-taking strategies, reading, and writing skills for studying. In addition, it will introduce the student to the expectations of the American classroom culture.
