What is a Pharmacy Technician?
A pharmacy technician, sometimes known as a pharmaceutical technician, is a health care provider who performs pharmacy-related functions. Pharmacy technicians help licensed pharmacists dispense prescription medication to customers or health professionals They work under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist

Job Duties Pharmacy technicians typically do the following:
Take the information needed to fill a prescription from customers or health professionals Enter customer or patient information, including any prescriptions the patient is taking, into a computer system. Package and label prescriptions Organize inventory and alert pharmacists to any shortages of medications or supplies

WISD Pharmacy Technician Program
The Program is designed for high school seniors who have completed: the required prerequisites, the application process, letter of Intent, 3 letters of recommendation, copy of attendance record, and an interview.

WISD Pharmacy Tech Requirements
Prerequisites –English I & II, Algebra I, One Science Course, Medical Terminology, and Health Science, (Any student with a felony and/or drug-related misdemeanor should not register for this class)

Training program used: Kaduceus Pharmacy Technician Program
Attendance is very important. This is a 180-hour program done over a 36-week period (159 Lecture hours and 21 Lab hours)

Course Objective The WISD Kaduceus Pharmacy Technician program will prepare students with the knowledge, technical skills, and work habits required for an entry-level position in the pharmacy field or related area.

Students must complete the required program hours and successfully pass the course.
Students will also prepare to sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) the week after graduation.

Medical Biller and Coder
Coders are responsible for entering and coding patient services into a computer system and generating invoices to be sent to the patient. Medical Biller and Coders are employed by insurance companies and healthcare organizations.

What is a Medical Biller /Coder
Job Description Coders Sort and file paperwork, handle insurance claims, and performs collections duties. Every time a healthcare provider has contact with and treats a patient, a claim is filed to the patient’s insurance provider. Once these claims have been received by the insurance provider, the job of the Medical Biller and Coder is to assign each contact, or encounter, a corresponding code.

other RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Translate patient information and into alphanumeric medical code. Collect, post, and manage patient account payments. Submit claims to insurance. Review delinquent accounts and call for collection purposes. Maintain strict confidentiality. Investigate rejected claim to see why denial was issued. Investigate insurance fraud and report if found. Follow up to see if a claim is accepted or denied.

Average Salary Starting $15 per hour = $28, 800 per year With 2 years’ experience coders can earn up to $35,000-$40,000 per year.

Course Objective: The WISD Kaduceus Medical Billing & Coding Program prepares and qualifies students to sit for the National Certification exam as an Insurance Coding Specialist through NCCT Inc.

Students must complete the required program hours and successfully pass the course.
Students that meet this criteria will take the certification exam at the end of the second semester.
