 Set up the background of misconceptions in the workplace.  Phrases that can mean the same, but how to discover if there are differences.  Phrases that invoke misconceptions, specifically instructional strategies and teaching methods.

 In the educational profession, the terms instructional strategy and teaching method are used interchangeably. In this work, we shall look at the meaning of the two terms, the similarities and differences between them, and how to use them to better prepare the future of instructors and learners.

 Foundation for the term  Underlying structure to use as a foundational starting point  Core traced back to Robert Marzano’s Nine Essential Strategies as a foundation

 1. Identifying similarities and differences 2. Summarizing and note taking 3. Reinforcing effort and providing recognition 4. Homework and practice 5. Nonlinguistic representations 6. Cooperative learning 7. Setting objectives and providing feedback 8. Generating and testing hypotheses 9. Cues, questions, and advance organizers

 Underlying structure traces back to Robert Gagne’s conditions of learning  The conditions of learning developed by Gagne provides a format to follow for planning out a developed lesson.

 Debates  Book Talks  Cooperative Learning Groups  Others not included in paper, but included in research: Think, Pair, Share Lecture Compare and Contrast Concept Mapping http://olc.spsd.sk.ca/DE/PD/instr/categ.html

 Lecture/note taking  Video presentations  SMART Board lessons  Student guided learning  Hands-On activities incorporated within lesson

 Workshops for instructors  Provide a list of types of instructional strategies  Provide a list of teaching methods that work  Include how-to and question/answer sessions that the instructors can develop a lesson with you and by themselves with you on hand to assist.

 Instructional strategies and teaching methods can, at times, have some of the same qualities. However, when the definition, meaning, and implementation of the terms are scrutinized, you see that an instructional strategy is more of a concept/activity whereas the teaching method is how the instruction is presented from beginning to end.
