GREEN & SUSTAINABLE CHEMISTRY Cà Foscari University of Venice Massimo DONOFRIO – Confindustria Veneto 1 June 08, 2012

M.DOnofrio – Confindustria Veneto - Cà Foscari, Venice - June 08, 2012 2

Un Programma di Federchimica in collaborazione con Confindustria Veneto da condividere nel territorio ProgrammaPartnersEvoluzioni T.A.C.E.C. - Towards A Carbon Efficient Chemistry R&S Metodologie e Best Practices Analisi e Position Paper 8 Partners: AGESI, Milano Energy Cluster, Legnano Fondaz. EnergyLab, Milano Euris Europe S.r.l.. Padova LUISS Business School, Roma Polo di Innovazione Energie Rinnovabili e Biocombustibili, Tortona «Suschem Italy», Bologna Tholos S.r.l., Cagliari 2 Progetti: CDM + Microcredito LCA, Carbon Footprinting M.DOnofrio – Confindustria Veneto - Cà Foscari, Venice - June 08, 2012 3

Actual development model is NO MORE SUSTAINABLE Western/Developed Countries are exciding in consuming resources Along the last 10 years (and with an unexpected progression during the last few ones) world wide financial flows seem to have inverted the route; at the beginning were BRIC Countries leading the new wave; today new comers are raising (Turkey, South Africa, S.Korea,..) Emerging Countries (nowadays well emerged!) in spite having moved/attracted huge resources, will generate new further & deeper changes; in facts richness pro-capita is still poor compared to Western Countries one and its distribution is far to be homogeneous Financial flows so far seem welfare driven; they move, as per an osmotic phenomenon, towards those Countries with less restrictions in, ei, Labour & Environmental matters M.DOnofrio – Confindustria Veneto - Cà Foscari, Venice, June 08, 2012 4

A new Development Model, more sustainable, has to be reached & set; deliverables are: governance of financial flows risk mitigation in: -> environmental matters -> social conflicts M.DOnofrio – Confindustria Veneto - Cà Foscari. Venice - June 08, 2012 5

Actual new models & protocols proposed by Western Countries like Kyoto Convention Reach Regulation Iso 14001 reside on economical starting bases very difficult to protect & maintain. The challenge is to let Emerging Countries accept these best practices. Developped Countries cannot jet play the referee role because in «suspicion» conflict of interest. The world Peaceful Governance pass through safeguarding collective interests (in both Developped & Emerging Countries) applying the same rules M.DOnofrio – Confindustria Veneto - Cà Foscari, Venice - June 08, 2012 6

Italian and Veneto Region Contribution to a Sustainable Chemistry Chemistry Manufacture at Country and Veneto Region levels, in the largest part, is made by small & medium sized firms (PMI); it means too small critical mass to may successfully manage Research & Innovation matters Research & Innovation is the ineluctable step to pursue a more sustainable development (accompanied by internazionalization) to compete in the actual globalized scenario PMI size is limiting relationship with Academic institution (Green Chemistry) making difficult the technology/innovation transfer (Sustainable Chemistry); there is not a guilty on left or right side; simply, there are not the right conditions M.DOnofrio – Confindustria Veneto - Cà Foscari, Venice - June 08, 2012 7

@ a good idea @ a good manager @ a good market niche @ a good exit- route The death valley the distance between scientific competences and pmi M.DOnofrio – Confindustria Veneto - Cà Foscari - Venice June 08, 2012 8

The relationship among Chemistry PMI Firms & Academic Institution has still wide margin for improvements; each of us has to take care to a piece of the puzzle Industrial Representatives (starting from Confindustria) trying to facilitate a synthesis of needs Academic Institutions trying to appreciate a potential virtuous circuit (basic-applied-basic) for new research opportunities Government Institutions providing, as appropriate, new rules to establish ideal conditions to let social parties esiarly to cooperate, starting by removing any potential conflict M.DOnofrio – Confindustria Veneto Cà Foscar, Venice - June 08, 2012 9

Thanks for your attention! Thankful for documentation & suggestions is due to:. Federchimica, dr Sergio TREICHLER. Confindustria Veneto, dr Marco ARMILLOTTA.
